i left my heart in…

So.

I haven’t posted in awhile.  And by awhile I mean a week and a half.  After my little trip to California I sort of took a break from anything non-essential in my life and do you know what?  It was awesome.

I’m not sorry.

I had all kinds of little aha moments during my hiatus and I can’t wait to tell you all about them… later.  This is noteworthy, because as a mom to four I don’t really stop long enough usually to have any kind of epiphany, which, by the way, was an epiphany in and of itself.  Whoa, now your head is spinning.  But more on that another time…

Back to “the trip.”

My sisters, mom and I stole away, post wedding festivities, and spent a day in one of my favorite places.  The last time I was in the city by the bay was when Mr and I were dating.  It had been awhile, too long.  I tell you what, I forgot how beautiful San Francisco is.  I think it’s the loveliest city I’ve ever been in.  I love the hills, the architecture, the smell of the bay, how you can taste the salt in the air and feel it on your skin and in your hair.  We found a lovely little french cafe to eat breakfast in, reaffirming once again that one of my favorite things about visiting a city is the foooooood…  Then we drove Lombard street, because how can you go to San Fran and not drive Lombard street?  I mean… My favorite spot is always the marina–so gorgeous, and windy, and perfectly chilly.  And I love how you can see everything.  The bay, the golden gate bridge, all the tourists taking pictures of the bridge, Alcatraz.  In a stroke of true serendipity, there was a Saturday morning sailing club out on the water while we were there.  I mean, come on.  I’m obsessed with sailboats.  (No but seriously, you should see my house… obsessed with sailboats.)  There was a fair bit of shopping and walking, and we ended the afternoon at Alamo Square park, sitting in the sunshine on the grass staring at the painted ladies and reliving scenes from “Full House.”  (I wanted to be Stephanie as a kid.  Not kidding.)  During the drive back to Sacramento at the end of the day, Ava and I decided to nap in the back of the car while my sisters took super flattering pictures of me sound asleep, my head tipped back and my mouth wide open.  Cause really, what are sisters for if not to take really hideous black mail pictures of you?

I’m really so grateful that Mr. was so sweet about me stealing away for 6 days even though we’ve hardly seen each other for the past 2 months (dang business trips), and even though it meant he had to do Easter all by himself with the other 3 littles.  He made breakfast cake and took them to the neighborhood Easter party solo, and hid all the eggs and everything.  He even sent me a video of Ethan riding sans-training wheels for the first time on his new Easter bike.  (beware mothers: if you leave your babies for a few days they’re going to have all sorts of milestones in your absence!)  Man, I love him.

I loved spending real time with my mom, my sisters, and my darling cousins who I adore.  I loved getting to see my best friend from high school and his sweet little family.  (Yes, my best friend was a boy.) I hadn’t seen him since he left on his mission when we were both 19 and that is just a disgrace, since he was practically a brother to me and my four sisters.

There’s so much more to say, but it’s late and the littles have to be up early for school so I’ll just end by saying, that I’m so grateful for this beautiful life I’ve been given, and how it’s led me to so many different places, and how I’ve met so many people who I love, who have written themselves on my heart.  I hope I never get over the feeling of amazement I have when I see a new place, or go back to a place I’ve been before.  I hope I never forget how good my Heavenly Father is, and how he has blessed me my whole life to be surrounded by so much beauty and so much love.  I’m not worthy of it, but I sure am grateful.

Oh and since I’m sure some of you will notice.  Yes.  I did chop my hair.  7 inches to be exact.  And I’m not sure how I feel about it yet, I’m still going through hair shock.  ;-)
