quick and easy all natural dry shampoo recipe

robe. bench. shaker. label maker.

When I shared my post about how I go 7 days between hair washing several months ago, one of the most common bits of feedback I got, came from ladies who had been told by dermatologists to stop using dry shampoo because it can cause hair loss.  What?!  I about fell out of my chair.

Apparently the talc and alcohol used in dry shampoos is really bad for you and can clog your pores and damage your hair follicles.  I started looking for a better solution to the dry shampoo I’ve been using for years, and this is the recipe that came up the most.

The great news is, it’s actually a really fantastic dry shampoo (it works insanely well) and you can make it with things you probably already have in your cupboard and a few essential oils!

I’ve said this before, but incorporating essential oils into our daily life has been, well, life changing. I had no idea how many toxic products I would be able to replace with oils, and I am so happy that I’m able to provide better safer options for my family.  Plus, you know I love to make things.  I genuinely enjoy creating my own beauty products.  And I never have to wonder what’s in them.  If you want to start using oils, are curious about them, or want to join my oily tribe (its fun!) click here to read more.

Okay, now on to the recipe!

For this dry shampoo all you need is cornstarch, baking soda, unsweetened cocoa powder (if you are brunette, omit if you are blonde) and 3 essential oils: lavender, cedar wood and rosemary.

First combine: 1/4 cup of cornstarch with a teaspoon of baking powder and a teaspoon (more or less depending on how dark brown your hair is) of unsweetened cocoa powder.  Mix well.

Then you are going to add 4 drops of lavender oil. (Lavender supports healthy hair growth and adds a lovely floral scent.) 2 drops of cedarwood oil. (Cedarwood supports hair strength.) And 2 drops of Rosemary oil. (Rosemary unclogs scalp pores and balances your hair oils.) Amazing what oils can do, right?!

Mix it all together and put it in a shaker.  This is for ease of application.  That’s it!

I use mine in the morning after my workouts.  I apply it to my roots and let it sit for 2-3 minutes and then I blow out my hair for about 4-5 minutes with this round-brush blow dryer I shared a couple months ago and I am ready to go!

If you want to get started with oils this month and want to make this dry shampoo, I recommend ordering the Premium start kit (I talk about it here), it is the best value and will get you all your starter oils as well as a diffuser and some thieves cleaner and other samples.  Then simply add Rosemary and Cedarwood to your order.  I also recommend signing up for essential rewards if you want to incorporate oils into your life and order often, because you get a percentage of your order back each month.  If you ever have questions about oils, don’t hesitate to ask!

Thank you. I. Could feel that dry shampoo just could
Be so bad for hair. So what I’ve tried doing is just washing with water once a week and shampoo only once. But I have mostly been suing the powder dry shampoo. Just because the spray one smelled like alcohol. So thanks for providing an alternative.

Dry shampoo can make my hair WHAT?!?! Ditching dry shampoo now and definitely gonna try to use your recipe and make my own. Lately, I’ve been trying to go 4 days without washing my hair so I’ve been using a lot of dry shampoo and everybody has been telling me my scalp looks really dry so I guess the dry shampoo was doing that, I never thought of it.

you can, but it won’t work the same. The oils help with balancing your scalp oil and also keeping your hair healthy.

Hi Cori, I was just wondering where you bought your shaker bottles for your dry shampoo? Do you recommend the bottle has a lid/cover?
