Stepping off the airplane and into a wall of green was almost shocking, considering the scenery just prior was the brown barren desert of the valley of the sun.  After a drive to the airport accessorized by all varieties of prickly vegetation, the first hour in Seattle was spent in wonder, marveling at the giant trees which have been left seemingly undisturbed despite the city rising up among them.  The second hour was spent in a (slight) state of claustrophobia as we drove into the hills and the green seemed to overwhelm everything, the sunlight, the air and especially me.  But then, oh then, a little valley opened up and the sun was shining, and there was green everywhere you looked, and the hills rolled into mountains seamlessly, and everything was alive and I rolled down the window and the air was cool and clean and felt fresh in my lungs.  The sun shone down in magical little patches through the leaves creating shadows and light that danced with the breeze.  And I fell in love with the Pacific Northwest.

  2. YAH for washington. I understand about the green. I’m from here and when I visit other places it’s just not the same. I think that’ll be the only thing I miss when we move in December. I’m glad you’re enjoying it.

my husband & i went to college on the coast of oregon & spent a lot of time in washington, too. it’s just a magical place. make sure to take your kids on lots of wild hikes through the woods–you feel like a hobbit among all the massive trees and ferns and moss! if you ever venture down the coast, cannon beach oregon (and haystack rock) is a gorgeous, quaint little beach town with fantastic shops and restaurants. definitely worth a weekend trip if you’re able!
