the road not taken.

Since last night’s post was pretty much a novel, (you know how much I love to talk)  I’ll keep it short(er) tonight.

First off, how do you like the new blog design?  I love it a lot.

Cindy from Blessed Graphic Design studio did an out of this world (pun intended) job of taking my obscure, slightly random idea and bringing it to fabulous fruition.

Plus, she’s just cute.

And we all know how much I love cuteness.

You should really go check her out.  You will swoon over all the stuff in her portfolio.

She’s practically a magician.

So, all day my favorite poem has been dancing around in my head.

Did you know I’m a sucker for poetry? (English nerd over here.)

Well, my favorite poem is “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost.

I like to recite it to my kids at bedtime, along with other more whimsical works by Robert Louis Stevenson, like My Shadow and The Swing.  Then I pat myself on the back for raising my kids so cultured, whilst they drift off to sleep singing the theme song from “The Spectacular Spiderman.”

Anyways, the words have been echoing in my head all day, as I thought about all the different choices we make that change our life.  Some tiny, some not.  What will I eat for breakfast? Where should I go today? What career path should I choose?  Who will I marry?  How will I speak to the woman at the check stand? What will I do when the man cuts me off in traffic, etc etc??  All these choices we make, they become our fate, and then our fate becomes us.

Who we are is defined by what we choose.

Saying yes to one course of action, means saying no to the other.

And the older I get, the more I realize that every choice sends you down a path, and you can’t really ever go back.  What you choose becomes part of you.

The Road Not Taken

by: Robert Frost.

TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

(the man was pure brilliance.)

I’m a recently “retired” (new stay-at-home-momma!) English teacher, so I LOVED this post. I too have that poem memorized; it’s one of my favorites. The other day, I was staring at my baby boy and so many “If I hadn’t…” thoughts came to my mind. If I hadn’t met my husband, I wouldn’t have my baby. If I hadn’t waited for him on his mission, I wouldn’t have my baby. If I hadn’t married him, I wouldn’t have my baby. Sure, I would have a baby…but it wouldn’t be this baby. Me + my husband = our sweet little boy. Following my thought process here? Anyway, I’m glad that I chose the path I did. I have a happy little family…and that has made all the difference ;)

p.s. I LOVE the new blog design. Simple. Cute. Classy.

Yay poetry! Tennyson and Sherman Alexie are two of my favorites. Did you know that most teachers teach The Road Not Taken incorrectly? My poetry professor polled my class and only two had it taught correctly!

Oh, and the color of your top is divine.
