scared happy.

Last week, each of my darlings faced a fear.

Hannah had to ride the bus for the first time.  She was terrified.

Carter started kindergarten.  Enough said.

And Ethan, had to face the unavoidable reality that he now has to spend 3 1/2 hours everyday with nobody around but mom.

Now that’s scary.

Every time my kids have to face a fear, I sort of hold my breath for them, but inside I know it’s so, so good for them.

Each handled their own challenge beautifully, and I noticed something.  They grew from it.  They were walking a little taller with a little more confidence when they stepped off the bus at the end of the day.

Eleanor Roosevelt said that you should “do one thing everyday that scares you.”

That is so cool.

I don’t think it has anything to do with thrill seeking, or being a masochist.

It’s about not letting fear dictate our lives.

Fear makes people mean, and ignorant, and critical.

And worst of all, letting fear run you means you live a small life.

On the other hand, doing something that scares you can be liberating.

Conquering fear makes you more accepting.  I find I’m more critical of others when I’m intimidated by what they are doing, how they are living.  When I give up my inhibitions and live the life I truly want to live, all I feel is joy.  There’s no room to be critical.

Don’t be afraid to step out into the darkness and try something you’re afraid of.

You might just find yourself.

As for me, I’m going to take Mrs. Roosevelt’s advice and do one thing (big or small) everyday that scares me.

Even if that means balancing precariously on a cement divider in 5 inch platform heels, because Mr. thinks it will make for a good picture.  Of course, I couldn’t hold it well enough for anything even remotely cool, so you get these instead.  Me in some “right before I fell off the wall” pictures.  Not so fabulous.

But it sure was fun.

I loved seeing all your fabulous “dressed on a dime” link-ups last week.    Get ready to link up again tomorrow… don’t be scared!

More fabulous thrifty tips to follow.

oh and ps.  If you’d like to post an outfit, but you don’t have a blog, email me a picture and I’ll put it up in tomorrow’s post.

  1. I love your outfit and your shoes too. But what I really love… it’s your blog!. I keep reading it everyday since the day I saw it (3 month ago). For some reason I could not leave comments, something was blocking it. I hope it works this time.
    You have a lovely family.

You hit the nail right on the head! I’ve been trying to be braver with fashion and if I think it looks good and I know it’s in fashion, to just go ahead and do it and not care what others think. It’s working out fabulously too! I’m getting braver and braver! Thanks for the post, it makes me hopeful : )

It is so scary to watch our little ones grow up – but so important to let them learn and grow! Sounds like y’all are doing a great job with your three adorable little people! They are so precious. :)

  11. That outfit is REALLY cute! But my favorite part of this post by far is the fact that your cute little girl is making almost the same pose as you are in the photo above. Somebody wants to be just like her mom :)
