grown up.

I was just wondering if anyone knows at what point you feel 100% like a grown up.

I mean, I’m 28, I’ve been married for 8 years, had 3 babies, and purchased 2 homes.  If I don’t feel all the way grown-up yet, then when?

Take Tuesday night for instance.  Back to school night.  Or, I guess they call it Curriculum Night now, because it sounds more official, and we all know how scientific 2nd grade curriculum is.  Anyway, I’m in there sitting at my daughter’s desk, thinking about how I can still remember 2nd grade pretty well, and that’s probably because it wasn’t all that long ago.  And then I realize how anyone from the education system still intimidates the crap out of me, like I’m still in high school or something.

That’s about the time I start feeling like an impostor.

It’s awesome.

You know what’s even more awesome?

Thinking that because I wear nice blouses and trouser jeans and heels, that people will assume I am the age I am and take me seriously, but in reality they still think I’m younger.

For example:  I was standing at the bus stop the other day with all three littles.  An old man shuffles up with his granddaughter who also rides the same bus.  He looks at me, looks at the kids, points to me, and says to the littles (who are standing next to me and calling me “mom”),

“Is this your sister?”

Fabulous.

I thought my kids aged me a bit.  You know, made me look like I was maybe over 20.

Now I know, I just look like their teenage sister.

I’m turning 30 this year. I have a husband, two kids, a mortgage, and I still wonder when someone is going to catch on and call me out.

But, as much as 30 scares me, I realize that my confidence, though shaky or non-exsistent in some areas, has grown tremendously, and feeling fifteen and scared or rejected might be starting to creep away. I think it’s a positive, but I’ll let you know on my 30th birthday, when I hide under the covers and refuse to acknowledge the day.

I get told I look like I am 19 when I am 26. And to make it even worse my husband looks like he is in his late 30’s. So I get asked a lot if he is my dad!
But my mom always said my youth will pay off when I am in my 40’s!

I’m not sure if this has been asked or shared before, so if it has I apologize. I was wondering if you could share what kind of makeup you wear. I’m sure the fact that you have beautiful skin doesn’t hurt, but you always look so flawless. I’m always on the hunt for a great foundation/powder so I would love to know what you use.

    and p.s. – you’re adorable!

  4. You are the cutest mom! And it sounds like you’ve done so much in life already! I’m 24 and just got married. No kiddos yet. People still ask me if I’m 18, so I understand what you mean. Love your style!!

  5. I love this outfit so, so, so much! I wouldn’t think to pair dark pants with tan jacket and belt, but that just shows how much I need to learn from fashion blogs like yours.

Love the outfit! Just my style :) And yes, I feel the same as you do. Don’t get mistaken for way younger that much, but do wonder when I will feel grown up. Esp like the part about how “anyone from the education system intimidates the crap out of me”….haha! Me too! Thanks for the smiles today :)

  8. for some reason people always think i’m much younger than i am.

it also doesn’t help that my grandma still thinks i’m 16.

  9. LOL GREAT POST!!! I have three kids too and I get the same shenanigans going on. My kids are 10, 6 and 4. I had my oldest when I was just a baby–18. Now, of course to me 18 is a baby, but when I was 18 I thought I was “all grown up”. Now, I feel like I am going back in age in some aspects, but having kids also makes me feel more like 46 than 29. And PS–Cirriculum Night? Seriously. I know, what all does first grade entail anyway?

I love this outfit on you Cori. Totally chic–mom or not.

that is funny! While my hubby and I were talking about business matters and other “adult” responsibilities, I asked him “how can WE be talking about this stuff? aren’t we too young to be doing this?” HAHAAA!!! We are 32 and 34, have four kids and are building our second home… WE FEEL LIKE WE ARE STILL 20! HAHAAAA!!!!

    You are adorable!!!! :)

LOL, I used to always get those kinds of comments. After I had my first baby (I was 26 at the time), and old man asked me if I was a child bride. What in the world?? I am very petite and looked young for my age. Now that I am 37, I don’t get those comments quite as often!

  12. I have the same problem. The worst is when hubs and I are at church and people stare because they are trying to figure out if I’m in YW or we are actually one of the married families in the ward.

    Cute outfit, as always!

  15. I was just thinking that the other day. I’m 34 and can say that I definitely don’t feel 100% grown up. Last week my girlfriend of 25 years and I were chatting on the phone while she drove to her daughter’s parent night. In the midst of our gabbing I said, “You’re going to parent night — wow. Did our parents feel this young when they went to parent night for us??” I’m starting to think there’s no such thing as being 100% grown up.

And, this outfit is awesome. Love the neutrals and scarf.

Sorry to say but I’m 36 and still don’t always feel grown up. Every once in a while I’ll look around the dinner table at my husband and three kids and think, “Gosh, how did THAT happen?!?!” It can be humbling to realize that I’m the mom and am supposed to have the answers when really I’m just whinging it.

  17. I also have the same dilemma. I am in my early 30s but people think I am in my early 20s. Sometime can be a good thing and sometimes not, specially when I hang out with my girlfriends that are taller than me and older than me like in their 40s. Yes! they are my best friends… older people. And for some reason I get along better with their moms or any mom for that matter. :-)

  20. I am still waiting to feel like a ‘grown up’ at 34 with 2 kids (one in 6th grade for Pete’s sake), 2 purchased houses and no career…..and I’m ok with that!
