my beauty faves.

I’ve been getting a lot of emails lately asking about my hair and make-up faves, so I thought I’d do a quick round-up for you all.  Enjoy:

M·A·C Fast Response Eye Cream, $30
Clinique Super City Block Oil-Free Daily Face Protector Spf 40, $19
Buy Olay Foaming Face Wash, Sensitive & More | drugstore.com, $4.99

I’m a big believer in sunblock.  If you want to not look old the best thing you can do is protect your face from the sun.  I use Clinique’s Super City Block under my make-up every single day.  I like it because it’s lightweight and it has SPF 40.

Mac’s fast response eye cream is great for getting rid of those puffy dark circles, and you only have to use a tiny bit so it lasts forever.

I use an Olay regenerist face wash (different than the picture) and I love it, because it also exfoliates, and smells divine.  (I’m a big believer in things that smell yummy.)

Aveeno lotion:  Let me just tell you that this is like the most miraculous lotion ever made.  I have very very dry skin, and had terrible eczema on my hands for years.  We’re talking so bad that they used to bleed.  I saw a dermatologist, tried those $100 a bottle tubes of fancy prescription steroid creme for years (yes it was that bad) to no avail.  And then my fabulous friend in Arizona suggested I try the blue Aveeno lotion, which is what her doctor had suggested she try on her daughter.  I picked some up, (for around $6 a bottle I might add) and within 2 days my eczema was completely gone and it has never come back.  I am always telling people about this lotion because it’s incredible.  Also, it’s neither chalky nor greasy, which I love.

Make-up.

my make-up faves

Bare Escentuals® ‘bareMinerals® Get Started’ Customizable Kit, $35
M·A·C 239 Eye Shading Brush, $25
M·A·C 219 Pencil Brush, $25
M·A·C 217 Blending Brush, $23
M·A·C Pro Longwear Lipcolour, $22
M·A·C Eye Kohl, $15
M·A·C ‘Viva Glam Gaga’ Lipstick, $15
Maybelline Define-A-Brow : Target, $5.54

You may remember this post from November when my sister took me for my inaugural trip to the mac counter.  Well, here are my faves, and pretty much the daily line-up.

Bare Minerals foundation and warmth (plus the awesome brushes): I literally cannot describe the awesomeness that is this make-up.  My sister turned me on to it a few years ago and I will never go back to that gross liquid foundation.  This is one make-up that does every. single. thing. the infomercial says it does.  It makes your skin look even and glowy and fabulous.  It actually hides blemishes, like really hides them.  Instead of the whole, “oh look! makeup on top of a pimple” thing.  Stays on all day, feels really light on your skin, and I feel like I have had even better skin since I started using it.  (ie. less humiliating adult breakouts) And I should mention, if you have dry skin and have been told to stay away from powdered foundations, you need not fear bare minerals.  As mentioned above, I am like the queen of dry skin and this make-up is fantastic for me.

Eyes: This is where that trip to the Mac counter comes in.  I am sold on Mac eye make-up.  It goes on so well and stays put all day, which is good for me, because I’m busy and I don’t like to have to re-apply.  It still looks fresh at the end of the day.  I forgot to put it up there, but I start with Mac’s painterly paint pot.  It primes my eyelid and helps the make-up stay put all day.  Plus, as my sister said, it gives you that Vampire (the twilight variety) airbrushed look on your eyelid.  I use 3 eyeshadow colors and blend them all.  I’m boring and pretty much do my eyes the same everyday.  The colors I use are: Carefree, Make your Mark, and Wedge (in a matte).  And it should be noted that Mac’s brushes are the bomb.  I use Mac’s Eye Kohl in Costa Riche for my liner, and finish off with my cheap drug store Covergirl mascara that actually works fabulously.

Eyebrows: I use Maybelline’s define-a-brow which is amazing.  If you want to see more of my eyebrow regiment (which is, I assure you necessarily extensive) you can go here, and here.

Lips: I’m all about the Mac lipsticks now too.  Here are some faves (all Mac): Gaga’s Viva Glam (the only thing Gaga I like).  It’s a great nude lip color, and so creamy. Pro Longwear Lip pencil in Etcetera nice soft pink liner.  Lipglass in PRRR: fabulous glossy peachy-pink which is actually kind of creamy and not the slightest bit sticky.  Love.  The red lip: Pro Longwear Lipcolour in Lasting Lust. This stuff is tricky to apply.  You have to paint it on and you don’t blot at all, but once it’s on it stays put all day and doesn’t come off.  Win.

Hair:

hair care faves.

HANA Elite Flat Iron 1.5″ – 100% Ceramic, $260
Nature’s Gate Hair Defense Conditioner 18oz, $7.34
Amazon.com: Pantene Pro-V Sheer Volume Hairspray, Maximum Hold 4 11.5…, $17
Organix Moroccan Argan Oil Penetrating Oil | Folica.com, $7.99

First of all, to those of you who asked what my hair color is: I have no idea, because this is my natural hair color.  I don’t dye/highlight my hair.  The last time I did, 3-4 years ago the lady turned me into a skunk (not pretty) when I asked for “subtle golden highlights” and I decided that it wasn’t worth the trouble because I actually like my hair color and I look better as a brunette.  (Blonde hair washes my skin out in a big way.)  My stylist once described my hair as a medium golden brown, so if you’re trying for my shade, that might help.

As you all probably know by now, I have frizz-tastic hair naturally, so my hair care mostly consists of trying to get it not frizzy.  The best thing I have ever done was to go to the salon and have a Keratin treatment done.  Yeah, you can’t wash your hair for 3-4 days, or put it up, blah blah, and it’s expensive.  But it’s worth every minute of inconvenience for those 4 days, and every penny it costs.  It has changed my life, and lets just say, I no longer fear the rain.  I had the Marcia treatment done, and 3 and 1/2 months later, I still love my frizz-free hair.

Shampoo and Conditioner: because I had a keratin treatment done I have to use special sulfur free shampoo and conditioners, because normal shampoo would strip the keratin away.  Can I just say thank you to the grocery stores for starting to carry affordable sulfur free shampoos and conditioners.  I was so much happier when I realized that I could pick up Nature’s Gate sulfur free Shampoo and Conditioner for $12, instead of the $60 (choke) I had to spend at the salon. And it works great.

Moroccan Oil: So much better than regular hair Serum and lasts longer.  Thank you to my old AZ stylist Hilary for suggesting it.  It is amazing.  (And you can get it at the grocery store).

Styling Tools:  I use a Hana hair straightener c/o Misikko that I love.  Read about it here.  I use a regular run of the mill blow-dryer that I’m vanilla about.  And a Conair curling Iron that I’ve had since college and hate but am too lazy to replace with something better.

Hairspray: Love my Pantene Pro-V meduim-thick Hairspray.  It’s fantastic if you’ve got a lot of hair like me, because it actually holds the hair in place, but it’s still flexible, if you know what I mean.  It also locks out humidity.  Bonus.  Most hairsprays are rendered useless by my mop, but this stuff really works and actually you know, keeps the hair in place.

This one deserves it’s own picture.  Suave’s dry shampoo is ah-mazing and you can get it for less than $3 a bottle.  This stuff literally makes it possible for me to go several days sans washing without being a total greaser.  And trust me, when you have extremely long thick hair, anytime you can avoid the blow dryer you take it.
So there you have it.  All the junk I use to look human in the morning.
Hope you enjoy this lovely Thursday and have some sort of party planned for weekend eve tonight.
Woot, woot.
I’m excitedly running around all day, packing up as I’ll be jetting off to the beehive state tomorrow to visit my darling family for the weekend.  Isn’t Mr. so sweet?  I mention missing my sisters and he just goes and buys me a ticket to go see them.  Love that man.

Your makeup always looks very good. Do you use the primer with your mineral makeup? Also, do you wait a certain amount of time between moisturizing and applying the foundation? Third, do you use the matte or the regular formula? I have both, but they’re caking and settling on me for some reason. Maybe I’m getting too old to use it…Maybe it is because I don’t have the Mineral Veil, because I thought it was breaking me out when I tried it 10 years ago…

I don’t use a primer with my make-up, but I know that bare minerals sells one. When I put my moisturizer on it looks oily, that means it’s still wet. By the time it dries, it doesn’t look oily at all. So I just wait for my face to not look like a greaser and then apply. Usually 1-2 minutes. With b.m. it’s all in the application. I swish and then tap a lot so there’s not too much powder on the brush and then apply a thin layer in light circular motions across my face. It doesn’t ever feel cake-y to me. I’ve tried the matte but didn’t like it quite as much so I stick with the original formula.

Also sis and anonymous, the Clinique city block kind of works with a primer if you put in on after your moisturizer, before your make up. :)

How curly/frizzy was your hair prior to the Keratin treatment? I’ve always wanted to try but i’m afraid it won’t work on my hair.

In some areas my hair is ringlets and some areas it’s just waves, but most of it is just big in-between curls. And it’s pretty frizzy. I think the Marcia treatment is really versatile so I would definitely talk to your stylist about it.

I love MAC products, their brushes are the best! You should check out the charcoal brown eye shadow next time you’re there. I decided not to get the brow powder you recommended and got this one instead. I LOVE it because it’s so versatile, it’s great to fill in brows and I also use it as a shadow. Thanks for the post!

1st time commenter – I have sensitive, acne prone skin (I’m in my mid 40s – I thought the break outs would have stopped by now… UGH!). Over the years, I have tried many foundations from inexpensive to higher-end brands. Until recently, I used Mary Kay foundation. HOWEVER, I recently discovered and fell in love with Physician’s Formula Healthy Wear tinted moisturizer with SPF 50. I found this product in a major discount chain for less than $10. Not only am I getting great coverage, but moisturization and SPF protection as well. Another plus – it doesn’t cause me to break out. Love this product!

I also really like their gel eye liners. I’ve always wanted the staying power of a liquid liner, but I just can’t seem to get the hang of applying a liquid; therefore, I use a pencil. The Physician’s Formula gel liner has the staying power of a liquid with the application ease of a pencil. I highly recommend that product as well. The gel liner does come in 3-pot sets color coordinated for your specific eye color for roughly $10. Along with the 3 color pots, you also get an eyeliner brush; however, I prefer using my own eyeliner brush rather than the one provided.
