elements of a momiform.

Jeans: Nordstrom Rack (similar here.) Sweater: Forever 21. White button up: Loft.  (similar here.) Ballet flats: Steve Madden.  Belt: Doweast Basics.  (simialr here.)

I absolutely detest the idea that just because you happen to have babies, you have to spend all day in sweats.
I like to get dressed every single day.  Even if I’m sick, even if I just had a baby two weeks ago, even if I don’t go anywhere, even if the only human over the age of 8 who sees me is Mr.  I feel better when I’m dressed.  When I feel better, I’m a better mother, wife, human, etc..
And the 5 people who share the same residence as me will testify to that.
But I also see the wisdom in clothing that is comfortable and functional.  Especially now that I’m a mother of four (still getting used to that) and I’m back on the floor changing diapers, nursing a baby 12 times a day, wiping spit up , hefting a carseat, and still running my household.
Which means most days I resort to my mom uniform.  Henceforth to be known as the momiform.  Here are the elements…
1. Boyfriend jeans: Loose enough that you can do just about anything in them, but they’re not “mom jeans.”  I like mine distressed, it gives them more personality and if they look a little worse for the wear by the end of a hectic day, you can’t really tell.  Also, I just think boyfriend jeans always look understated and chic.  Plus, hello they’re comfortable!  Here’s a little tip for you as well.  If you can’t find a pair that make you feel fabulous (ie. unflattering, too baggy, etc) try a distressed pair of skinny jeans and size up a couple sizes.  Same effect, infinitely more options.  Here are some of my favorites: 1, 2, 3.
2. Sweaters are my weakness.  I don’t know what it is, but I always feel good in a sweater.  I swear if cardigans ever go out of style I’m in real trouble.  I may look a little bit like a librarian a good bit of the time, but I don’t care.  To me, a sweater always looks preppy and put together.  Such a brilliant alternative to the hoodie.  I guess it’s kind of a cruel trick of fate that I happen to live in one of the hottest places in America, and sweaters are kind of a joke here.  Oh, for that lovely year we spent in Seattle… all the sweaters my little heart desired.  Loving these ones right now: 1, 2, 3.
3.  Ballet flats.  Now that I’m hefting a carseat again, my favorite heels are taking a seat at the back of the shoe rack; at least until my post-partum body gets it’s balance back, and my ankles stop rolling… good thing I’ve got an impressive collection of ballet flats.  (Thank you Target.)
4. A Chunky watch.  I wear a watch every single day.  There are six people in my household to keep track of, several of which need to be somewhere, picked up from somewhere, or on their way to somewhere, on time every single day.  I have to know what time it is.  I like chunky watches, because the face is big and easy to read quickly.  Also, big watches make your wrist look smaller.  It’s true.  Dying for one of these.  (Ahem Mr., Christmas…)
5 A belt.  Mostly because I am so happy I can wear them again.  Also, I have a lot of skinny belts, and they’re a great accessory that can’t get pulled on or ripped out of your ear by a curious nursing baby.  Great inexpensive skinny belts here and here.

There you have it… The momiform.

  14. I totally agree with you. Dressing up makes me feel better. You look amazing by the way. You definitely can’t tell you just had a baby 2 weeks ago. I think the problem with many moms is that they don’t bounce back as quickly as they don’t have anything to wear. I think the biggest challenge with mom’s is 2 things:
    1. they don’t lose the weight quickly and can’t fit into anything but sweats and 2. they don’t have the clothes in their closet so they can’t dress up.

I have a miserable cold today but I decided to dress up and put on my trouser jeans, a turtleneck underneath my short sleeved argyle sweater and i’ll pair it with cute bow patent flats and my pink trench coat. I may feel like crap on the inside but I hopefully won’t look it on the outside. Love your blog. Feeling good about yourself as a new mom is so important and getting dressed is a huge part of it.

    Agi:)

  15. You look truly awesome for just having a little nugget a mere few weeks ago. And I agree with the momiform – when I was home, just the simple act of getting ready made me a much more balanced person. Great recommendations. (And YAY to belts again!)

  17. Congrats again to you Cori. My husband and I are thinking of adding a fourth bebe to our house too, but I’m scared! I commend you for all you do AND still looking fabulous. I am the same way–I get dressed every day no matter what is or is not on the agenda. I have been loving the pictures of your new little. So adorable and you look AMAZING! Did you seriously just have a baby or were you just playin’?

Oh. My. Goodness. When I saw the first picture I just assumed it was “pre-baby”…then I read your post and could not believe you look so great only 2 weeks post-birth. You are adorable and obviously very organized! Still looking for the right boyfriend jeans for me. The GAP brand wasn’t flattering for me and I am also very petite.

You look great! I wish I had your get dressed mantra! I had my little bundle of joy the same day as you and still feel like wearing sweats everyday :) Partly because I usually have no where to go and I feel best when I’m super comfy and partly because they make me look skinnier than wearing my real clothes! Baggy sweats and over sized shirt hides all the rolls ;) Any tips and tricks to hide the post baby pudge (u obviously are!) and nursing in super cute clothes?? That’s my other hang up!

Looking good sissy! Funny you wrote this post cause the first thing I can’t wait to do is get home and shed my clothes of the day and slip into my comfies… And on my days off I live in my gym clothes/comfies. I dream of days when I don’t have to be dressed and ready to go before 8:00 am. I think it could have something to do with the fact that 5 days a week for the last 6 years I have to be ready for the day and start work by 7:20 am. When I get home, my daily outfit reminds me of the stress of the day and I want nothing to do with it.

You look great! And I totally understand the getting dressed everyday thing. I was homeschooled through 10th grade and people always asked, “do you get to stay in your pajamas all day?” nope. Never. I hate not getting dressed. Even when I’m sick. =)

  28. As soon as I saw that your sweater was from Forever 21 I went straight to the website to buy it. Is it the navy/lime sweater?? The stripes look more yellow than the goldenrod stripes in your pictures!

Hey, I think she may have just linked to a similar sweater, since it looks like the stripes on the one she’s wearing stop right above the chest to the shoulder (just dark blue/black, no stripes), whereas the linked ones go all the way through. I was thinking the same thing at first, but I think they’re different. :)

You look amazing! Congratulations! I have a serious question, because I agree that I feel so much better when I’m dressed. How do you do your workout and get dressed? I’m just feeling logistically challenged! Do I put on my workout clothes and take my oldest to school, then get all ready? Many days I find it’s like 2pm and I still haven’t gotten my workout in. I hate the inefficiency of getting dressed, make up on, etc., only to go workout and doing it again. What do you do?!?
