I love a good windy day. It does nothing for my lion’s mane of hair, obviously, but I love good windy days nonetheless. I think I got that from my mom. Actually, I know I did. It’s really windy in Arizona in the spring. I had forgotten that, until last week. And the weather is so lovely right now, not too hot or cold, sunny and breezy. Unfortunately, I can’t go outside.
You see, I’m allergic to basically every single desert plant that is native here. And the bad cold I had, which became bronchitis, has now progressed to full on pneumonia.
Who gets pneumonia in the spring when it’s gorgeous and sunny out?
Me that’s who.
We’re also not going to talk about the fact that Mr. just happens to be away on business, and has been for the past 2 weeks.
Life’s timing is impeccable.
Which got me thinking about how sometimes kind of crappy things can happen at the most inopportune times. Like that one year when both my Grandmothers died and my brother was diagnosed with cancer all in a few months time. Or how last week, right as I was getting truly sick, and feeling overwhelmed being alone with all four littles and Mr. out of town I got some rather hurtful comments on a post that was about 2 sentences long. Timing.
Anyways, tonight I feel like blogging, because my horrible coughing fits are keeping me awake, and I don’t feel up to doing much else. Plus, getting sick and having to lay around more than I’m used to has made me introspective.
Did you guys watch the academy awards on Sunday? I almost forgot all about them, but then I broke my no T.V. habit and watched. I make exceptions for special things, and with 4 sisters and a Down Syndrome brother who’s life literally revolves around the movies, the academy awards were pretty much the super bowl for my family growing up. In fact, I don’t ever remember watching the super bowl, but the Academy Awards we never missed.
Anyways, all I have to say is, that I about died for Jennifer Lawrence when she fell walking up to the stage to receive her Best Actress award. But then, of course she was completely adorable about it during her speech, and then even more hilarious and adorable in the press conference after and I decided that everyone, myself included just loves her even more now. As they should.
Everybody falls at some point don’t they?
So, in honor of JLaw (why does EVERYONE have a shortened name now?) and her awesome fall, I’m going to share what would have been my most embarrassing moment ever, if anyone had actually seen it.
A few years ago, when I was largely pregnant with Ethan I was walking home from church one Sunday. This was when we lived in Utah and our church was around the corner, because let’s face it, there’s a Mormon church around EVERY corner in Utah. Anyways, there was always a large flood of people pouring out of the building heading home at this time and that day was no exception. It was a calm sunny afternoon, not a breath of wind, and I was wearing a flowy circle skirt and pushing Hannah and Carter home in the double stroller. All was well until suddenly a huge gust of wind comes up and blows my skirt straight up. And I mean up–like to my head, my larger than normal pregnant bum hanging out for all the neighborhood to see–up. (Think Marilyn Monroe, but not at all sexy.) Anyways, I almost fall over myself trying to pull my skirt back down, and after I do, I look around. Somehow, miraculously, there was nobody there. At all. I swear a minute earlier there where dozens of people around, and then suddenly no one. Literally the most embarrassing thing I can imagine, and NO ONE SAW IT. Hallelujah.
It was one of those serendipitous things.
Thank Heaven.
But I’ve often wondered what in the “h” I would have done if anyone had seen it. And it wasn’t until I watched Jennifer Lawrence on that stage Sunday night that I realized what I should have done if that had been the case.
Everybody falls at some point, the trick is to own it.
Hey Cori, I’m so sorry to hear you’re sick :( I really hope you’re feeling better soon. Life has great timing alright, it’s brave of you to open up like that over your blog and you’re not alone, my dad died in September and my granddads recently been diagnosed with cancer, so the journey gets pretty rough sometimes. Nobody deserves mean comments on posts though, as I remember from Bambi (yup the disney film haha) if you don’t have nothing nice to say, don’t say nothing at all! Your story made me smile about the skirt episode, I’m lucky I have such a bad memory because all my embarrassing moments have somewhat faded now and unless someone was to remind me I honestly don’t remember them. I saw Jennifer Lawrence’s little trip but she recovered so well and really there’s nothing she could do to make anyone love her less, she’s such a good actress. I absolutely love this dress by the way, it’s really so beautiful on you, and the print is just fab :) Hope you’re keeping cosy and warm and that pneumonia goes away soon xxx
I hope that you get to feeling better and don’t even pay mind to the nay-sayers! I find your blog and what you share to be inspirational and a bright spot in my day when you post!
Love this post. Don’t you just wonder why some people can’t keep unproductive thoughts to themselves? There are plenty of blogs and posts when I may think rude comments or thoughts to myself, but what good are those to post? To possibly hurt someone I have never even met and really don’t know at all? I don’t see the point. I say, keep on doing what you’re doing. Honestly, you pull it together better than most, and I think that’s something we as moms all strive for! I love reading your blog; there’s no doubt you have great style, are an awesome mom, and ugly posts are only reflective on those that write them. You’re rockin it! Like you said, just roll with it!
You are miraculous. I have my first still cooking away inside me (due in 11 wks) and I dream of the day…someday….I look as glamorous as you. As in, someday in my life. The fact that you are this flawless with 4 littles (one of which months old) and PNEUMONIA makes me think anything is possible.
Thanks for shining a little light on my extremely pregnant and swollen day.
Don’t worry about the mean comments. You seem like one of the sweetest ladies ever & your family is just adorable. I felt bad for you last week. But don’t let it get you down, girl!!!
The weather is similar in southern Nevada and it was hell for my allergies and asthma, but I’ve had great results with my chiropractor, of all people! If you know a great chiro, you might inquire. I had a dress blow up around my “waist” (ribcage, because I was 35wks pregnant)once! No one saw either, I only remember because it was st patrick’s day and I had been so thrilled to have a kelly green dress that fit, and I insisted on wearing it even though it was super windy. I hope you’re back to 100% soon!
Jennifer Lawrence… I can’t even talk about her, I get too worked up because I love her so much. SO MANY FEELS. I cried when she won. Cried, hyperventilated, fell down… it was weird. But whatever. I think you’d like this one video of her on Youtube – it’s from her hometown and it’s an interview with her childhood bestie who has Down Syndrome who she’s still close with to this day. It’s so precious.
Anyway, love your outfit – your hair! your shoes! your cardi! Lovely!
Cori, don’t worry about nay-sayers, people will always have an opinion and sometimes they’re not productive or nice, but why someone would share them I’ll never know. I’ve also had a skirt malfunction- I was walking through a parking lot, more like weaving through the cars, while making my way to the storefront. My flowy skirt got caught on a bumper of a car and RIPPED OFF! I didn’t know what to do but my first reaction was to grab the skirt, wrap it around my waist and hi-tail it to my car. I was so humiliated, but crazy things happen and now I just laugh, although at the time I think I may have cried. I find that time can make most things humorous. Keep your chin up, you’re fabulous!
Cori, I can’t believe someone would write something mean on your blog…that’s just simply rude and uncalled for. I am sorry that happened. I enjoy reading your posts…really do. I also love seeing the pictures of your family and outfits. Take care, don’t trip and hope you get better pronto.
It does seem at times that everything bad hits us at once, doesn’t it? And for all the lovely, kind, comments you get on a daily basis, the one that hits you is the mean-spirited one. Well, I would probably feel the same if it were me but try to put that aside and know that you bring so much sunshine into the lives of others! I love your blog, your fashion sense, your littles and your honesty :) Keep being you, keep sharing your sunshine and being a blessing to the rest of us. I hope you feel better very soon~xoxo~
Ha! When you wrote J Law I was definitely thinking of Jude, so that could get confusing. A couple weeks ago I was wearing a skirt at work, as I often do and I walked across our campus when a student came up to me and said, Miss, your skirt is tucked in your under wear. oh. my. gosh. i about died. luckily i hadn’t seen anyone else on the way over and luckily a girl told me before i went in to see about 50 people in a room. yikes.
Hope you feel better soon, sounds awful!! Your story had me laughing, I can totally relate. Love your hair, would you ever consider doing a tutorial on how you style it?
Well humiliation aside, your experience gave me a good laugh this morning. There will always be haters, can’t do much about it, just don’t let it change you. You are fabuous, dahling! I am having a giveaway on my blog for some oils that could help you feel better, go check it out!
You look way cute in that dress! Oh, and by the way, I got pneumonia in March of 2010, right in the middle of rehearsals for the Gila Valley Temple cultural celebration, when I had to teach dances to 250 youth. so you’re not alone. Get some meds, and you’ll be feeling better soon!!
Your embarrassing moment just gave me a good laugh! Luckily, it wasn’t as bad as it could have been!:) I’m so sorry you’re sick! I know all about those terrible coughing fits. Hudson was only a couple weeks old when I got pneumonia and all that coughing would always wake him up in the night! It was horrible! And, your ribs start to hurt… Ugh! I wish I lived closer so I could help you out! I hope you’re starting to feel better with meds. I love when those kick in! I do love your cute, cute dress. You’re always such a cutie!
Love your ** statement at the end-made me chuckle. :) Some people look for opportunities to bring others down and put their on woes and shortcoming labels on others… Have you ever read that book “You Are Special” by Max Lucado?…about the wimmicks, stars, & dots? If you haven’t, track it down and read it. It is a children’s book and I think it is fantastic with a good moral and applicable to all of us no matter our backgrounds. We all like to label others to some degree, and we all put labels on ourselves…good and bad. “Pretty, fat, skinny, smart, successful, ugly, short, sweet, good cook, bad driver….our labels for ourselves and others are endless. The key is not caring what others say about you….good or bad. But what God thinks about us, is what really counts. Praise can make us arrogant, and proud at times, while criticism can beat us down…. All that said, I “label” you fantastic, gorgeous, beautiful, charming, great writer, awesome hair (that you should really not cut) etc…. But seriously, go grab and read that book even if you’ve already read it!
I hear ya girl, this has been an awful winter/spring for colds and other such awfulness. I do hope you feel better soon! First, I really enjoy your blog. Why? Your style, sense of humor are my faves. I have my fingers crossed that someone that lives near you is bring you chicken noodle soup. Being sick with littles and dad out of town is a lot of work. Remember you are appreciated – it’s easy to forget in the middle of all of it. Also, throw the snarky comments in the trash. That is where they belong honey. Sending you a big warm hug!!!!
Corilyn, I LOOK UP TO YOUR BLOG! I am a member, and found your blog INSPIRING after my second baby. I found your blog last year when my “baby little” was almost 1. I got into a fashion slump and had lost hope on being a “healthier” version of myself. I am loosing the weight slowly, although those chocolate cake in a mug recipes don’t help, and getting a grasp on my new mommy style. I wonder sometimes how I do it with 2 littles and your blog helps me see that it’s just a part of life. I actually have read your ENTIRE blog 3 times. Late at night when everyone is asleep I go through it like a book for inspiration. Your modesty is something I have talked to my young women about in church in reference to trying to be different can be modest (i.e. trying something new and not the norm). Thanks for your blog. I look forward to it.

You are the sweetest thing ever.
Love you + your sweet, cheery, happy blog.
