The funny thing about having a family is how you sort of unconsciously create traditions without really meaning to. One of our accidental ones is going for drives in the country. It started while we were dating in college because honestly there’s not much else to do in Rexburg, Idaho. Later when we were married and poorer than church mice we’d put the babies in the car and just drive. They’d fall asleep, we could talk uninterrupted and it was almost like having a real date, except really really cheap.
Now that the littles are bigger, our drives are more adventures. There’s almost always a destination at the end, one we almost never know before we start, and it usually involves running, picking weeds, breaking branches, dirtying knees, twirling, and any number of other things you can do out in the country. Friday night’s adventure found us on a dead end gravel road, framed in abandoned fields, with an old red barn in the distance, and a spectacular view of the Wellsvilles. I’m not going to lie and say that I don’t get a little bit giddy thinking about how my littles get to be surrounded by so much beauty, right now when they are smack dab in the middle of that magical part of childhood where you’re old enough to really start exploring the world. It’s basically a dream come true.

my sister currently lives up there in Mendon, and i like to visit just to go for the drive and be out in the middle of nowhere!
That is a great tradition! Ditto on the hair and I was thinking too that your daughter has the posing down pat! Haven’t been in that part of the country yet…one day. Connecticut country is what we are soaking up for now, but I would love those mountains too!

You have a beautiful family! I love having traditions like that… One of our traditions is visiting parents on Sunday nights after church. And having Mexican food on fridays. It makes it so special having traditions that are specific to our family

I just can’t wait for my littles to be old enough that we can let them run. But now seeing this post, I think they actually might be. But the driving dates are the best kind. Even when you do have money, they end up being the best way to talk.
