When I was a kid my parents had all kinds of classic Christmas cassette tapes. (I’m really dating myself here) They had Barbara Streisand, Andy Williams, Bing, Nat Kind Cole, to name a few. But our very favorite was their Elvis Christmas cassette. And why was it our favorite? Because that tape had Elvis singing “Blue Christmas.” And really what kid (or adult for that matter) can resist Elvis singing “Uh-I’ll, uh- have, uh-a, bla-lue…” Our favorite part were the back-up singers oooh-woo-oooh-woo-ing in the background. Please somebody tell me you know what I am talking about… Anyways, we used to drive around a lot during Christmas. In fact, now that I think about it, it feels like we were always driving around in the car as kids–I’m sure we weren’t but somehow it always feels like that when you’re grown up. Anyways, while we’d drive around shopping, or running errands or looking at Christmas lights we’d ask my mom to rewind (yeah- rewind) and please, please, please play “Blue Christmas,” just one more time, about a million times. My sister Meghan, “the singer” in the family (who does a mean Elvis impersonation) would take the lead and me and my less musically inclined sisters would pull back-up and sing the oooh-woo-oooh-wooo parts. It’s one of my favorite Christmas memories.
It might be because of that song, or maybe just my general attraction to all things blue, but I’ve always loved it as an alternative color to the classic Christmas reds and greens. Our main tree (I’ve got three this year– don’t judge) is clad in mint and navy ornaments, I bought all blue wrapping paper for our gifts, and you should see the holiday table I’m setting this year. (Coming later this week.) I also love decking myself in something blue for Christmas. To me, winter feels like one long shade of blue and white and I kind of marvel at the cold and how it turns everything still and quiet this time of year. I love the way it tucks people into their homes and has them rushing from their car into the store, the church, their house. I love the cold colors of this season, and I tend to draw my sartorial inspiration from what’s around me.

what a chic dress!
ladies in navy
We had that album too growing up. My sister was a massive Elvis fan and would play it every Christmas Day. We’d all moan or laugh but soon enough we’d be all singing along. One year she gave us all our own copy on cassette and I played it for my girls for years. You won’t believe this but just yesterday at work we were playing christmas CDs and I was telling everyone about my Elvis Christmas album! PS You look fab as usual.
That dress is gorgeous!! What great Christmas memories. My favorite Christms song as a child was Silent Night by the Temptations. Weird question…what lipstick are you wearing in the pictures? I love the color.
Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Thanks Patrice! It’s actually a Loreal color: Fairest nude, mixed with a burgundy/brownish lipliner. It’s my latest go-to lip. ;-)
