One of our favorite family activities during the fall is to go apple picking. Since Washington is the country’s apple capital there is no shortage of u-pick apple farms to choose from in the Seattle area, but my favorite is Gordon Skagit Farms up in Mount Vernon.
On Monday we donned our rain boots and headed north to pick ourselves some Jonagolds.
The farm was founded by the Gordon family in 1932 and was originally a dairy farm. It’s still run by two brother’s although they started selling pumpkins out front many years ago, and then eventually u-pick apples and pumpkins and now it’s one of the loveliest spots to visit in the PNW. Worth the hour and a half drive north of Seattle in every way, Mount Vernon is totally my happy place. The kids and I went up there for apple picking last year, and this year it was just as lovely, it’s definitely one of our favorite fall traditions.
My parents were always really great about traditions and taking us to do cool magical things while I was growing up. We camped on the beach, explored caverns, saw most of the nation landmarks, went to Bishop’s pumpkin farm in the fall and to Apple Hill to cut a Christmas tree in the winter. My favorite memories as a child came from those times. Especially all the goofy singing with my sisters on the car ride home. The day after we went apple picking, I asked my kids what there favorite part of our outing was. Running around in the fields, picking the apples, seeing the chickens, getting a treat, and mostly just listening to all the good music in the car together… Sometimes being a parent is really hard, and most days I wonder if I’m doing anything right, but some days are perfect. Monday was perfect.
And we came home with 44 pounds of apples, so I’m thinking sauce, pie and cider making may also need to become a favorite fall tradition.

I totally cried at this post. Parenting IS hard. But those memory making times make it all worth it! Thanks so much for sharing.
Great outfit for visiting the orchard and love the pictures! It’s nice getting a look into your tradition and how much fun you’re all having! :)

Bishops Pumpkin Farm?? Is it the same Bishops Farm in Wheatland, Ca?! If so, I’ve been going there for 30 years and now my sister and I take her kids every year! Small world!
