We’re getting hit with the remnants of a Japanese typhoon today and over the weekend, which means the Pacific Northwest is going to be pummeled with deluge. It’s decidedly put a bit of a damper in our weekend plans, and we’re probably going to reschedule our trip to the pumpkin patch in favor of staying in working on house projects, and baking. I’ve got about 60 pounds of apples we picked last weekend so I’m probably going to be up to my elbows in apple peels and pie crust.
When you live in the PNW you’re no stranger to rain, in fact, it’s rarely a deterrent from doing outside things because you’d never leave the house if it was, but rain on this scale is rare here.
When you live in a place that rains a lot getting dressed during the wet months can feel a bit boring. If you need a raincoat and galoshes just to leave the house, it really makes having any kind of style kind of tricky. But living in a semi-constant state of rain has definitely challenged me to get a little more creative with my style and I’ve learned that during our dreary autumn, one way to mix up my rainy weather wear is to incorporate a great fall dress. This year I am all about the sweater dress.
I picked up this striped sweater dress at Nordstrom (my favorite place to shop) a couple weeks ago, and I love how classic and versatile it is. I’m not usually a fan of anything ribbed, but this dress is so flattering, and I love the way it has a classic breton stripe with the the turtleneck. For a trip to walk through the orchard I styled it with my favorite Hunter rain boots. I buy them in the children’s size because the shaft height works much better for my petite frame (and bonus! they’re half the price), but the great thing is they pretty much look the same (minus the reflectors- which don’t bother me at all) as the adult version.
I get asked all the time, what shoes I recommend for people living in a wet climate and I always recommend Hunters. I love that they look stylish, but they’re also made for the trenches. Seattle is a soggy place. The forest literally kisses the city, so it can be really wet and more importantly muddy here. You need the right shoes. Hunters are made to get wet and muddy and they always look great while getting the job done.
I always buy my shoes and boots at Nordstrom because their customer service is tops (especially in the shoe department- hello complimentary stretching) and they almost always carry my size. When you’re a 5-5.5 that’s not always a given (a lot of stores start at size 6- ugh) and I just really appreciate that they consistantly carry sizes for smaller ladies like me.
I like finishing my outfits off with a great coat (like this trench coat) and a plaid scarf. A fall dress with boots and a few accessories does the trick for dressing with style in inclement weather.
So do you deal with tricky weather? How do you keep your style year round?
