winter outing ideas with kids.

This post is brought to you by Abercrombie Kids. While this was a sponsored
opportunity, all content and opinions expressed here are my own.

As an outdoorsy family through and through, we love to be out in the fresh air, doing active things, and we love to be in nature.  But during this season, with blustery weather and sub-zero temperatures, we find ourselves inside more than any other time of the year.  And while we love to be cozy, when you have kids and you’re shut inside day after day, it can end up feeling rather cooped up.  I thought I would share a few fun winter outing ideas for kids that will get you out in the fresh air, and having a ball with your kids.

The key to getting outside this time of year, is picking the right clothing.  I had a child development professor in college who said, there’s no such thing as inappropriate weather for children, just inappropriate clothing.  Now, hurricanes and blizzards aside, I really believe that’s true.  The key to getting outside this time of year with your kids, is equipping them with really great warm coats.  I ordered these awesome coats from Abercrombie kids earlier this year and they have been living in them since the moment the packages arrived.  They’re all sherpa lined, so soft inside and out and super warm.   (All AFkids coats are 50% off this weekend only, so it’s a great time to pick one up!)

If we’re going to be outside for a prolonged outing, I make sure that each of my kids have layered up really well under their coats.  Abercrombie kids offers great flannel shirts, sweatshirts and sweaters that make it easy for your kids to be layered up for the cold weather and still look cute.  I also like to make sure my kids have hats and scarves, as well as long johns under their jeans if necessary.  If I am proactive about making sure my kids are dressed warm, we’re able to stay out so much longer.

Now here are a bunch of great winter outing ideas that you can do all through the holiday season and beyond to keep you from getting cabin fever.

Visit a Christmas tree farm.  Even if you don’t plan to cut your own tree (although why, not?!) visiting a Christmas tree farm is such a fun outing with kids.  Lots of tree farms sell cider, or cocoa, and have other fun activities to do.  Plus it’s fun to venture out and look for that perfect tree.

Go see Christmas lights.  This is one of our favorite winter outings!  There’s usually an amazing neighborhood in every city where they light the place up, but even just driving around and looking for houses lit up is fun.  We usually bring cocoa and make an evening of it.  If you are not sure about Christmas light neighborhoods where you live, just try googling it.

Go Ice skating.  This has been one of our favorite winter outings for years.  Here in Connecticut there is a free ice rink in downtown Hartford that we have skated at, but honestly, once the ponds freeze over, it’s free reign for us to skate, and I love skating out in the open air.  When we lived in Seattle we used to go ice skating at the Seattle Center.  I’ve even ice skated right off the beach in San Diego at the Hotel Del.  It’s such a fun activity in the winter and even little kids can enjoy it.

Go skiing.  Need I even elaborate?  Kids as young as 3 can start skiing, and my kids LOVE it so much.  (They’re also pretty much all better skiers than me now, except Ava, but just give her till the end of this season…)

Go sledding.  I love this one because it’s so fun, great exercise and it’s free!  If you’ve got a hill and some snow, you can go sledding.

Build a snowman. Get really creative with the design, and find some old clothes to dress him/her up in.  My kids build at least 2-3 snowmen every season and it’s so fun.

Have a snowball fight.  These are always epic battles with lots of strategy, and they are so fun.  Bonus, they burn a lot of energy.  Everyone will be ready for a nap at the end. ;-)

Deliver cookies to your neighbors.  We love baking up a bunch of treats and then going around and delivering them to our neighbors.  And you get a bonus activity of baking together.

Go Caroling!  This is one of my favorite activities with my kids, it gets them out of their comfort zone and bring Christmas cheer to everyone!  Pack a thermos of cocoa and some Christmas cookies for the end!

There you have it!  I hope these ideas help you get outside with your kids this season!  Remember, all it really takes to get outside with your kids this time of year, is making sure they’re bundled up!  And make sure to check out Abercrombie kids right now because they have tons of great deals right now and everything you need to get your kids bundled up!
