the perfect Breton striped top for spring

breton striped top. similar jacket. similar jeans. similar mules. bag.

Happy Monday everyone!  Despite the fact that we woke up with a fresh dusting of snow on Saturday morning, it looks like spring weather may have officially arrived here in New England.  It’s forecasted to be in the 50’s and 60’s all week and I couldn’t be happier!  I swear, as soon as the  weather starts to shift my brain immediately starts going into capsule mode for the new season.  Spring is one of my favorite seasons to dress for because it’s warming up, but it’s still cool enough to play with layers.  It’s like fall, but with lighter, brighter color palates and more cheerful prints.

One of my must have spring pieces in my capsule every year is a great black and white striped shirt (preferably Breton striped because it’s just such a classic).  Stripes are a great pattern year-round, but they are especially great I the spring, because they’ve got those great nautical vibes, and also, they pair really with other spring prints.  I love wearing stripes with florals, and polka dots.  I am always on the hunt for great Breton striped boatneck tops because they are my favorite and they can be a bit elusive, not to mention expensive.  (I’ve seen Breton striped tops prices well over $150, yikes.)

So imagine my surprise and delight when I stumbled onto literally the perfect black and white Breton striped top the other day, and (get this) it is only $9.  NINE DOLLARS.  I ordered it on the spot and when it got here I was thrilled to discover that it had the perfect oversized fit (made famous by Coco Chanel herself) and the quality was actually really, really good.  (Plus it’s soft.  I really like my knits to be soft, especially I the warmer months.) I’ve picked up a few basics from Walmart’s Time and Tru line in the last few months but this has been my favorite score yet.  If you are building a spring capsule I highly recommend adding this top to your line-up.  It also comes in a white and navy striped version and a few solid ones as well.

Here are a few other favorites from the Time and Tru line:

And while we are on the subject of Walmart.  They just launched their We dress America initiative. They’ve released new brands with Ellen DeGeneres and Sofia Vergara, and they also carry premium brands like Lord and Taylor and Maurices right on their website.  Makes it easy to mix and style those everyday basics you’re picking up for a steal (like this Breton striped top), with the longer lasting investment pieces like a great pair of shoes or a handbag.  As part of the We Dress America initiative, the site also has a section highlighting some of the biggest trends this season.

Are you dressing for spring yet?  How’s the weather where you are at?
