farmhouse Friday: girls shared bedroom inspiration.

bed. similar dresser. rug. pulls. sconces. greenery. mirror. wall paper. lamp. duvet. art.

Hey guys!  Happy Friday!  Today I wanted to share the mood board for the girls’ shared farmhouse bedroom redesign.  When Ava was born 6 years ago, we made the decision to keep the girls in separate rooms.  And because there is an 8 year age gap it was the right decision at the time, especially with naps and a baby getting up at night to nurse.  But I’ve always wanted the girls to end up in the same room eventually and now it’s time.  I think sharing rooms is great for kids and I loved sharing a room with my sisters growing up.

The challenge with this space is making it work for two girls at different ages and stages, as well as staying true to the period and style of our 230 year old farmhouse as well as keeping it whimsical enough to be a room that feels young enough to still be a little/teenage girls room.  Hannah’s been working with me on the design, and this is the plan.  I’ve started creating mood boards for my rooms before we start on them and I highly recommend it.  It helps so much to see it all in one spot and it’s a great way to gut check your design ideas.

We plan to do 2 twin metal farm beds with a cozy white duvet.  A pretty soft pink floral rug (we already have this and I love it even more in person).  I plan to wallpaper one wall with this pretty black and cream floral paper (wish me luck!) and I think it will play really well off the dark wooden original beams in the ceiling.  I found a lovely antique dresser several months ago and I plan to paint it black and add antique brass pulls.  Then we’ll add antique brass accents around the room and of course sconces over each bed for a reading light for the girls is a must.  We should be getting started on the design in the next week or so, and I’m literally so excited to get started!

Tell me what you think of our girls shared bedroom design!  Do you do mood boards before you start a design project?

As some who had to share a room with my 7 years younger sister it’s a nightmare. Especially for a teenager. Hated it.

Ah that makes me sad! I shared a room with my 8 years younger sister in high school and loved it. But there were 6 of us in my family and sharing was just part of life. Hannah and Ava are very close (she has sleepovers in Hannah’s room every weekend already) so this is a great natural step for our family. And both my girls are super excited about it.
