daily looks: Feb 17-22, and thoughts on learning how to be stylish.

Last week was a whirlwind!  Between my kids’ winter break Monday and Tuesday, a busy Wednesday, and leaving for New York for a weekend away with my sister, I feel like I barely blinked and it was over.  I’m sharing what I wore each day, and some of the outfits from the city.

During my train ride to NYC last weekend I answered questions that people had asked me over on my stories.  One of them was: “Have I always been stylish?”  I’m not sure I would actually classify myself as “stylish,” I don’t follow the trends too closely, and prefer classics anyway, but would classify myself as style confident.  I have absolutely developed a personal style that makes me feel at home and my best in my clothes, and that helps me live my best life everyday.  And no, this did NOT come naturally to me.

Which got me thinking all weekend.  I became style confident because I made up my mind to.  I use to think that having great style was some elusive thing that you were either born with or not.  And I was this awkward super short girl who didn’t even know how to find clothes that fit, let alone looked good.  But I decided, around 10 years ago, that I wanted to learn how to dress with confidence.  So I did.  I think the “fashion” industry thrived for a lot of years on making people feel like style was this untouchable, unreachable thing reserved for an elite few.  And I love how the accessibility of the internet has really wiped that away and democratized the industry.  I love that we can all access style so readily now, that anyone can feel confident and create inspiring  ideas, not just editors in magazines.

I guess the point I’m trying to make today is that if you don’t like the way you get dressed, if you feel like style is something you’d like to have, you can learn it!  You can learn/change anything you put your mind to.  You can learn what you like, what flatters your body, and how to style clothes in a way that makes you feel confident, like the best version of yourself.  Every style trick, every skill I know, I figured out, learned, experimented.

Not sure where to start?  Start by being intentional and planning your outfits.  Pay attention to what you wear that makes you feel great, what you gravitate towards, what isn’t serving you.  Start by planning at the beginning of the week; give yourself time to be creative.  Be fearless, and keep learning!  I promise, if I can learn it, so can you!

Feel free to use my weekly outfit planner (below), it’s a great tool for getting started with the process, and if you need a little (or a lot) of extra help, take a look at my Intentional Closet Course.  I walk you through the whole process of cleaning out your closet and building an awesome, stylish intentional wardrobe! Read more about that here.
