You guys know that ours is a house full of readers so our library is a very special place in our home. (I wrote here all about how I’ve raise my kids to love to read.) I love having a space just packed with book options, so my kids can come in at any given time (like, for example when we are staying home for weeks during a global pandemic…) and easily grab a book to read.
I thought it would be fun today to share how I organize the books in our home library. Bored while you’re staying home during the coronavirus? Why not organize the book in your home library!
I think “pretty books” are wonderful and I love using them as decor pieces, but our library is full of actual books, that we actually read and love, meaning not all of them are exactly “pretty.” Lots of paperbacks and bright colors, but I still think a bookshelf can look amazing even if your books don’t have beautifully aged hardback covers.
How I organize our books:
Our bookshelves are organized by genre and then by author. So one shelf is fantasy, one is young adult fiction, adult fiction, non-fiction books, business books and religious books. By grouping them by type of book and then by author, it makes it really easy for my kids to navigate the bookshelf, find exactly what they are looking for, and its easy to know where books should be returned to as well. It also helps when kids aren’t sure what they are going to read. If they know they feel like reading fantasy, they can go right to that section and see all the options. Easy peasy, and works like a charm!
A few tips for making the books look prettier on the shelf:
Stagger the heights a bit, it helps break it up a little. Stack some of the books here or there, (bonus, this works great as a bookend, and you’ll be able to fit more books.) Leave a little breathing room on the top shelves it will break it up a little, consider adding a globe or something meaningful.

Thanks for sharing! This is a great list of books. Already got “The Goose Girl” for my oldest. She pointed out that it is the same author as “The Princess in Black” Series. My 7yr old loved it. Maybe Ava would like the series.
