how to create a cozy fall bed.

If you’ve been around here for a bit, you know how much I love making my bed. I don’t know what it is about the process, but it’s one of my favorite little things I do every day. And truly there is nothing better than peeling back the sheets and climbing into a big fluffy bed at the end of a long day. I keep my bedding pretty light and minimal during the warm summer months, but when the temperature drops and the leaves start to turn, I am all about creating a super cozy fall bed. Here’s how I do it…

quilt set. duvet set. sheets. euro shams. throw blanket. rug. bed.

Start with a good foundation.

Before we get into the actual making of the bed, the first step for a truly great, cozy bed experience is to make sure you’ve got a great mattress. You’re never going to truly enjoy going to bed until you’ve got the right mattress. There are so many great options for mattresses online now, and most of them allow you to give them a try for at least a month before committing, so find yourself a great mattress. We sleep on a memory foam hybrid mattress that is so comfortable, and I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s been life changing for me. Back pain issues that used to plague me have all but disappeared. It’s like magic.

Invest in quality sheets.

Before last January we’d always slept on okay, but not great sheets and that was fine. But then I tried Boll&Branch’s signature sheets, and holy cow, I can never go back to mediocre sheets again. These are magic. They get softer with every wash, feel cozy but never hot, are a generous size and just look beautiful. There’s really nothing like climbing into a bed with amazing sheets, and it’s essential for a cozy bed. I have a 15% off code for Boll&Branch this month: use CORILYNN15 at checkout.

Embrace layers.

Surprise, surprise, Cori is recommending layering. But really, it’s crucial for a cozy bed. My favorite combination for the cooler months is, sheets, a cozy waffle bed blanket, a crisp quilt layer, a big fluffy down comforter with a duvet folded on the end of the bed, and a throw blanket thrown atop. By having lots of great lighter layers, rather than just one heavy layer, you can really customize your sleep experience, and adjust as the weather changes through the season. It’s especially helpful if you and your spouse sleep at different temperatures.

I keep everything pretty neutral on my bed with the exception of my deep moody blue sheets and bed blanket during the fall and winter months, but I love to add interest by playing with different textures and sheens. I love the cozy waffle texture of our bed blanket, next to the refined stitching our quilt, and my sheets have a totally different sheen than our percale duvet. Then our knit throw offers another whole layer of texture at the end.

Don’t skimp on pillows.

I know men love tease us about our over-abundance of pillows, but for me part of what makes a bed look inviting is a bunch of big fluffy pillows just begging me to dive in. I like creating a combination of different sizes and textures, euro pillows, king size pillows (or standard if you have a queen size bed) and of course throw pillows. All the pillows I use are feather pillows because I love how I can really get them fluffy. A little trick for you, if you find your pillows are looking a little flat or under stuffed (especially those euro pillows), don’t be afraid to double up in the sham.

Add a throw blanket.

Let’s be real, you don’t always want to just climb into bed at night… I want a bed that invites me in for a little nap on a Sunday afternoon, so I love adding a throw blanket I can curl up with, without having to unmake the whole bed. Throw blankets are a great way to change up the feel of your bedding by seasons or add color to neutral foundations. I think of it like the accessory of the bed.

Place a rug underfoot.

There’s nothing worse than climbing out of a warm bed in the morning and putting your feet on a cold floor. Even if you have carpet in the bedroom, adding a rug can really warm up and make your bedroom space feel finished and cozy.
