our carrara penny round patterned pantry floor.

Can you say that title 5 times fast?? A few weeks ago we finished our pantry floor and today I want to give you a peek and it and share the inspiration behind it.

So we’ve been working on a major downstairs remodel for about a year and a half, ripping out and switching our back staircase, reconfiguring the laundry room, rewiring the dining room and building out a whole new pantry from unused space in the living room. I know all these areas seem unrelated, but project creep is real, and since the stairs and area where we pulled space for the pantry are both centrally located, there were a whole bunch of other areas effected by the remodel… but this is a story for another post.

Our pantry is almost complete now. The sheetrock is finished, shelves are built and painted, lighting in and now the floor is done as well. We still need to finish the small hidden door, put the trim on the walls, and then hang the pantry door, but we are definitely in the home stretch. Today I want to give you a peek at the pantry floor.

Inspiration behind the pantry:

I love to gather inspiration from our home when we travel, or visit cities. Many of the spaces in our home are a tribute to places I love, even if it’s just in a color or a feeling. Our pantry design was inspired by my favorite Boston bakery Tatte. I’ve loved this bakery chain for years. Every location is beautiful and inspiring and I knew I wanted to bring the feel of that into our home somewhere. The pantry felt like the perfect space, since it’s the epicenter of our food storage, where all culinary endeavors begin in our home, and Tatte is such a delicious and inspiring place. They’re always bright, with lots of whites, woods and metals, baskets of baked goods, and subtle pops of black and green. Tatte bakeries all have a signature mosaic floor. See some of my favorite Tatte bakery spaces below.

I knew I wanted to bring in the feel of those spaces and most of all, I wanted to do a mosaic floor. I ended up settling on this amazing Carrara penny round tile with the black design elements done in a charcoal slate penny round. I am seriously in love with this floor. I love that it’s a nod to classic kitchens and bathrooms (mosaic tile floors are very traditional, and have been used for hundreds of years), but the Carrara penny round updates the style and gives it the most beautiful movement and depth.

Laying penny round tile takes a bit more work, and a couple extra steps beyond laying regular tile, bit all in all, it’s very easy to work with, so much fun to lay, and the finished product is so lovely. I’ve got a reel showing how we laid the tile down over on my instagram account today, and if you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments. Chris loves Julia has a great tutorial on laying penny tile if you love the style and are feeling handy. And I’ve linked our tile and all the tools and supplies you need for the project below!

If you are looking for a great classic tile to use in a bathroom, pantry or mudroom, this one is lovely and makes such a statement.

I’ve got a few more things to finish up in this space and then I’ll be sharing the whole pantry with you all!
