girl’s shared bedroom design plan.

I finished the boys’ room a few weeks ago, and now it’s time for the girls’ room! Their room was in much better shape than the boys’ room. I had painted it white and done some simple decorating a few years ago, but honestly it felt a bit uninspiring and I wanted the space to feel amazing. So off we go on another fun design adventure.

As I’ve mentioned before, I always create a mood board before I begin designing a room, it makes such a huge difference in the success of the project. Often a few things will change through the process but it gives me a jumping off point and a direction to head and helps me avoid making costly mistakes.

You can see the boys’ room mood board here, and how it came together here. I can’t believe how close the two are, and having the mood board made the process so streamlined and easy.

So let’s take a look at the direction I’m heading for the girls’ room design.

Design Inspiration:

When I’m working on a room design I usually start with one piece, a pattern or textile that serves as the inspiration for the whole space. In the girls room my initial design inspiration came from this Sandberg Linnea Garde Wallpaper. It’s got the most beautiful pattern and I love the colors that run throughout. I am so excited to see how it all pulls together. This is also my first foray into real wallpaper (not the peel-and-stick variety) and I’m excited to try it out for the first time.

Paint and Wallpaper:

As I mentioned above, I’ll be doing the Linnea Garde wallpaper from Sandberg on the wall over the girls’ beds. For the rest of the walls in the room we are doing this 4″ beadboard paneling and painting it Jojoba from Benjamin Moore. It’s a beautiful rich olive green color and should pair perfectly with the wallpaper.

Textiles and accents:

Since we are going bold with color in the room, painting everything a deep green with a busy green wallpaper, I want to keep the textiles as simple and neutral as possible. I’ll be bringing in lots of great texture and pattern with the rugs, roman shades, bedding, and pillows, but everything will be done in neutral soft whites and taupes to soften the space. I went with these gorgeous bamboo channel quilts from Quince in the color sand and they are the perfect soft taupe color. I want their bedding to be simple, cozy and cohesive so I went with the bamboo sheets in sand as well. The rug in the room I have had for several years, it’s a beautiful run and I’m so happy it incorporates perfectly into the design.

Furniture:

We are sticking with the same metal farmhouse beds my kids have been sleeping on for years. They’re a great piece, go with a lot of different styles and are very solid. I found a small vintage pine desk that I am refinishing in for a naked scrubbed pine look, and it will serve as a writing desk/nightstand between the girls’ beds. I’d like to hunt down a scrubbed pine dresser as well, but so far my search hasn’t yielded any fruit.

Window treatments:

I made a plaid roman shade for the boys room, and I loved the outcome so much I plan to repeat it again in the girls’ room. I’m going to be using a taupe gingham fabric to create the roman shades, and will for sure be back with a tutorial to show you how to do it!

Lighting:

For lighting, we rewired the girls whole room and so we could do sconces over their beds. I’m really drawn to these Lulu and Georgia sconces, but I’m not 100% decided, since I may want to do my own custom pleated lampshade with a printed fabric for the shades… we shall see!

I definitely have more open-ended in this design than I did in the boys’ room but I think it’s going to come together beautifully! Stay tuned to see how it turns out!
