what to wear: family pictures.

family pictures. circa 2012

I’m ashamed to admit this, but the last time we took family pictures was right after Ava was born… 3 years ago.  What can I say?  Life is busy and family pictures are a headache.  Stress of the actual day aside (and taking pictures with kids is so stressful) there’s finding a good photographer, coordinating outfits, choosing a location, watching the weather, etc. etc… This is why it’s been three years, guys.  But kids change so much in that amount of time and I really like to document our family as it grows and changes.  Long story short, we’re taking family pictures this month.

Fall is a great time of year to shoot family pictures because the golden colors make everything look gorgeous and you’ll have nice recent family pictures to send out with your Christmas cards.

When I’m preparing for family pictures I really like to plan coordinating outfits that aren’t too matchy, that are based in neutrals, and layer lots of patterns and textures without being too busy, and of course a little sparkle for my girls. I like to capture the whimsy of my kids, while still keeping it all grounded enough that it doesn’t feel clowny.  I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to top our American Gothic family shoot, with it’s tulle skirts and solemn faces, but I’m still excited to take pictures with our family just as it is.

This year, I’m feeling  rather inspired by the deep burgundies of fall, but I always like to have some nice neutrals and navies in there to keep it balanced.  Here’s a little family picture outfit inspiration.

Mom’s: Sweater, Jacket, Jeans, Boots.  Dad’s: Sweater, Shirt, Jeans, Boots, Tie.

Big Sis: Sweater, Jacket, Cords, Skirt, Boots. Lil Sis: Dress, Tights, Shoes, Headband.

Big Bro: Sweater, Vest, Jeans, Boots.  Lil Bro: Shirt, Sweater, Cords, sneaks.

If you’re planning to do Christmas cards this year, Minted is my favorite place to order them.  I love the organic texture of the cardstock they use and their print-ready designs have a lovely aesthetic.  You can design right on their website and have them shipped to your door easy peasy.

Bonus: you can get 10-15% off right now when you spend between $100 and $150 on your cards. {use code:JOY2015}

here are a few of my favorite designs:

    Next time you’re back in Cache Valley, I would love to do a complimentary family photo session for your family!! (Maybe that will give you the incentive you need to get them done…..we all need a lil’ help!) I love your style and all of the modest inspiration you give us all and the time you take to do it. I met Meghan in college and I’m a little jealous of how amazing of a family you have!

    I’m a photographer…in Kentucky! :) Love the outfits you have planned! And I love that you did the tulle skirts in the former photo shoot. I would die of happiness if one of my families showed up in tulle! haha
