don’t wait.

Skirt:made by me.  Blouse:Charlotte Russe.  Shoes:TJMaxx.  Belt: Thrifted. Necklace: NY&Co.

This title totally makes me think of Dashboard Confessional. Moving on…

This is for all you ladies out there who say you’ll dress the way you want to when you have more money.  A complete breakdown on the cost of my outfit:

Skirt: $3 dollars a yard, 1.5 yards= $4.50
Blouse:marked down from $25=$10
Shoes: major clearance at TJMaxx: $10
Belt: Super thrifty: $0.50
Necklace: marked down from $20: $4.50
Total cost of todays clothes: $29.50

I dare you to feed 4 adults a meal at McDonald’s for less.  Seriously.  Just a bit of advice, from someone who really isn’t an expert on anything, so take it with a grain of salt.  There’s no point in waiting to be comfortable in your own clothes.  I used to think I was just a t-shirt and jeans kind of girl, but then I realized that I just didn’t know how to dress my miniature self, and the fact that finding clothes that fit was so impossible was a little depressing to me.  So I kind of ignored my clothes and pretended like I didn’t care, and I spent  a lot of time feeling kind of, well drab.  Don’t wait until your body is just how you want it, or your bank account is filled to the brim to start investing in yourself.  You don’t have to spend a lot of money; time and creativity go a lot further than a large wallet.  Trust me, you’re worth it.  The way you feel about yourself on the outside can change the way you feel on the inside.  It can give you confidence you didn’t know you had.  In my case it helps people take me more seriously instead of treating my like a 12 year old girl.  And it helps me feel like an adult, a woman, instead of a little monkey.  That’s the power of clothing, of style.  That’s why I care what I wear.
In other news, this belt kind of annoyed me all day long.  It was totally high-maintenance.  Plus, I’m like 99% sure this outfit would have looked better without it.  Go figure.  Outfit pictures are so instructive.  Oh, that’s another little bit of advice.  Take pictures of yourself.  The camera tells you a lot more than the mirror about what actually works for your body and not.  Okay, stepping down off the soapbox now.

  1. Gorgeous! You make the best skirts I swear. Wish I knew how to sew well enough to make some. Love this outfit with or without the belt, it’s beautiful on you!

  2. I 100% agree with you! There was a point when I kind of stopped caring what I wore b/c frankly the company I work for doesn’t care WHAT I wear. So I kind of got lazy. But then I realized that I want to feel good about myself for ME. The taking pictures part is key too I think. Sometimes an outfit doesn’t work and I can only see that in a picture – mirrors LIE! :P And the other way works too, sometimes I’m not sure if something goes together but in pictures it looks fun and interesting.

Great advice :)And yeah, I should really learn to sew.

  3. ha, now that dashboard song is stuck in my head and while i was out running errands this morning i put it on the ipod. good times!! brings back memories of my single days!

and yes, if we are always waiting for the right time — we will be waiting for a long time. wear what you want to wear now — make it work with what ya’ got!

Nina- Thank you! This skirt is actually really easy to make. If you can sew even a little and follow directions, I bet you could whip it up.

Elaine- You are so right, mirrors lie! Hahaha!

Mary-I’m so glad someone else knows that dashboard song! I wondered if anyone would get the reference. You made my day.

  7. Love this post! I totally agree with you about how we shouldn’t have to wait until we are “at our best” to fit into certain things. It’s all about learning what you like and what you feel good in. Mix these two together and then it all turns into how it looks on you. In the end it’s really confidence that does shine through. =)

I understand about belts being annoying, but it adds a great pop of color. I like your title as well; doing RMRS has made me branch out within my own closet and accessories without going shopping once.
The shirt is great by the way!
