tale of the camo pants.

Camo pants are totally one of those things I told myself I would never do.  But then, you know camo got all trendy and suddenly they had all these really cute styles and I guess I’m a sheep and all that because suddenly, I really wanted some.  I’m kind of particular about my pants, though.  That happens when you’re short, for two reasons.  1. There’s no such thing as ready-to-wear when you’re under 5 feet.  Everything needs to be rolled or hemmed.  and 2. You really don’t want to over-emphasize those shorty short legs.  I’m always a little apprehensive about skinny jeans, because they can be tricky for me.  So when I found this fantastic pair of camo pants from Anthropologie I couldn’t resist; you know how I feel about a good boyfriend cut.  Well I waited two months on back-order for a size 24P and when they finally arrived, they were huge.  I’m still crying into my pillow about that one.  (Not really, but kinda.)  Vanity sizing is making my life difficult.

Anyways, one afternoon for some particular reason I decided to go in to my local Old Navy and just see if maybe they had a pair of camo pants.  You know how when you shop at a nice store the sales people are all helpful and attentive.  They make you feel like a million bucks, which is good because you are paying that much for their product.  But you know what I really love, when you go into a store like Old Navy, which you know is very reasonably priced and they still treat you like a million bucks.  Bravo Old Navy!  Anyways, this little teaspoon of a girl, who I realize now was about my height, informed me, that while they didn’t have any women’s camo, they did in fact have this fantastic pair of camo pants in none other than the little boys section.  I wanted to hug her.  How did you know, little Old Navy sales associate, that I love to raid the boys section!  I tried the pants on and at long last achieved that perfect boyfriend cut in a camo pant fit that I had been looking for!  It turns out there are some benefits to having the body of a twelve year old boy, I can wear their pants.

So here’s my super secret tip for you on this Friday morning… when you are looking to achieve just the right “boyfriend” cut and you aren’t succeeding with women’s wear, try venturing into the little boys section.  Their sizes run up to 18– which I believe is comparable to a women’s 4.  After that, the smaller men’s sizes are fair game. (and psst… Old Navy’s got a pair of men’s slim fit camo pants.)

Soldier on, ladies.

Thanks for the tip! I prefer the slim fit over the skinny jeans because I don’t like pants so tight that they look painted on. I’ll have to check out the boys section now! :)

This post made me smile for two reasons: 1. I told myself the same thing about Cammo pants and then lo and behold they came out and I totally caved. I was so sure that I was MUCH too old to wear cammo anything (you know, being the ancient 35 yr old mother of 4 that I am) and told myself that I was better off avoiding that trend. 2. I love that you think outside the box and find pieces that work for you, no matter where you find them. I find sometimes we are so “narrow-minded” when it comes to clothes, we won’t even size up because heaven forbid we have to buy a bigger size than we normally wear. Just buy what fits, already, and get over it! Okay end rant. I ended up buing thise Gap zipper front skinny cammo pants and absolutely LOVE them. They fit so well (I don’t have the height issue as I’m 5’7) but they are a dream to wear and I am happy I finally succumbed to the trend as they are now one of my favourite pairs of pants!

  3. Well, I doubt I would fit into little boys size clothes but I do have small feet! I think you’ve mentioned it before, but I love being able to choose from girl’s size shoes too. I’m a 6-6.5 which means I can usualy wear a Girls 4.

I’m 5′ 2″ and often raid the children’s department for clothing. My all-time favorite military jacket (that I get compliments on all the time) is from the boys department at Old Navy. Thanks for the tip on the camo pants…I just might need to make a stop there this weekend! Happy Friday!

I too shop in the children’s department of old navy! My fave pair of jeans is from the girls dept. Its so nice to be able to wear their jeans without having to hem them, since I am 4″11. I just hope I can kick the last of this baby weight so I can fit back into them!

Cori – what size did you end up getting the baseball tee in? I’m trying to gage if the shirt would run big or true to size. Thanks for your help! :)

I got a size 2. Fits like a dream. I think they go down to a size 1, but I wanted mine slightly slouchy.

I really love how deep in color these camo pants are — it somehow makes them more dressy? Not that camo can really be dressy — but just a little more put together. Love the whole outfit!

  10. You are so smart! I have never considered going into the kids section. I think I might have to head to the men’s for the right size. But I am heading to old navy tonight for these pants! How about the T shirt you are wearing? Where do I pick that up?

Adrienne, you can find the baseball tee at ASOS. There’s a link at the bottom of the post to the shirt. It’s an online only brand, but I love their stuff. Great prices too.

Hi, Cori! You have suh a great sense of style. My question for you is about the length of your pants…as a 5’0″‘ 48 yr old woman, I struggle with getting the right length on my jeans so that I don’t look shorter but also trying to look appropriate for my age. I really dislike seeing women my age who try to dress 20. Is there any rule of thumb you use when hemming or rolling your jeans up? Maybe so many inches above the ankle? I know this sounds silly. I just strive to aways look my best and sometimes it is such a struggle! Any suggestions would be welcomed!

Not silly at all! With jean length, I’d say you want them to hit the floor, but just barely, if you are planning to wear them with flats, and just long enough to graze the floor if you are planning to wear them with heels. I have separate jeans for flats and for heels. With rolling, I would keep it close to the ankle. Maybe an inch or two above at the most, and dark washes are always fabulous and a little more mature. My mom sticks with dark washes and they look fabulous on her. Just a tip: always wash your jeans 3-4 times before hemming so they don’t end up too short. And I know exactly what you mean about trying to dress 20. Such a pet peeve of mine.

I understand your frustration with vanity sizing. I’m slightly bigger than you and often have difficulty finding clothes that fit. On these occasions, I wonder what women smaller than me do. I love getting my jeans from the kids section. I buy 7 for All Mankind and they’re significantly cheaper, fit, and I don’t need to have them altered.

I originally thought vanity sizing was restricted to women’s clothing (I have dresses in my closet that range from size 2 to size 10, and they all fit correctly when worn). But now it’s creeping into my toddler’s closet! My son is rocking bunting for up to 6 months, 70% of his 6-12 months clothing still fits, 25% of his 12-18 months clothing now fits and he’s even been sporting a couple shirts that are for 2T and 3T (oh, and he’s officially 14 months on Wednesday). Can’t we all agree on standard sizing, apparel industry!?

P.S. The baseball tee is adorbs ;-)

Oh don’t know why I didn’t think of looking in boys! I sometimes buy girls but I am 5’0 and look young ( I am 35 but most people think I am much younger) so I have to be picky or else get confused for a teenager or middle schooler! I totally agree about skinny jeans, I am not completely sold on them because they highlight how short I am and sometimes there is so much excess length….
