Last week Ethan walked in the door from school, I’d been burning my pumpkin spice candle all day, and when he came in he said, “Oooh, yum! It’s smells like fall in here. I love when the house smells like this!”
It made my heart want to burst. Smell has always been my thing. You know that old country song, “The song remembers when?” For me, that’s how smell is. My old shampoo takes me right back to college, my husband’s cologne is home and a thousand happy memories, and don’t even get me started on the fabric softener I used when my kids were babies… I love the way a smell bring back memories, takes me back to places I’ve been. I love that it can transport you to a happy time and place.
I don’t know about you, but this time of year I pretty much want all the pumpkin spice things. From pumpkin pie blizzards to my favorite candle, if it’s pumpkin spice anything, you can sign me up. When I smell pumpkin spice, I suddenly feel like I’ve got a book and a cup of cocoa sitting by the fire reading, or picking apples at an orchard, or riding on a hayride to a pumpkin patch, or walking on a sidewalk under a canopy of golden leaves… Fall is my absolute favorite, and to me, pumpkin spice is fall.
