I’ve been freezing all day long for pretty much the last 2 weeks.

Apparently moving 1100 miles north means colder weather.  Hm.

After living in Arizona for 2 1/2 years which is pretty much equivalent to living on the sun, my body just can’t seem to adjust.  I love getting to wear all the extra layers.  The freezing cold hands and feet?  Not so much.

I blast the heater, keep the fireplace on, have hot chocolate (sometimes) twice a day, and walk around the house in chunky sweaters and wool socks with slippers.

And yet, I’m still cold.

So the other night as I was shivering my way towards bed, Mr. suggested that I soak in a nice hot bath before retiring for the night.  I love a good hot bath.  I mean, I like the water to be almost to the point of scalding.  We have a large garden tub in our bathroom and I imagined filling it to the brim, submerging myself to the neck and marinating in there until I could feel my feet again.

But when I climbed in, the bath wasn’t hot.

It was barely warm, tepid at best.

I told Mr, and he went out to the garage to check the water heater.

The tank sits right next to wear the littles drop their wellies on the way in the door and apparently one of them had accidentally bumped the temperature control all the way down.  Mr. cranked it back up and I decided to sit in the bath in the hopes that the hot water would be ready soon.  After all, the water was kinda warm.  But after ten minutes I was shaking a little and decided to surrender and give-up my idea of feeling warm.

About that time Mr. walks into the bathroom holding my biggest pot full of boiling water and carefully pours it into my bath.  Instant heat.  Ahhhhhhhhh.

Then I waited while he went back, and brought another pot of hot water, and another and another.

And finally after about 20 minutes and several trips back and forth from the stove, I was sitting in a deliciously hot bath and feeling toasted to the bone.

I have a point to this story.

Besides publicly acknowledging that Mr. is way better to me than I deserve.

He is a man who acts.

One of the greatest things I have learned from my husband is to act, and not be acted upon.

God made two kinds of things in this world.  Things to act and things to be acted upon.

We are meant to act.

I used to let whatever I was offered decide what I wore.  Whatever Old Navy was carrying is what I bought, independent of whether I actually liked it.  And because I thought that nobody would ever carry anything that really fit me, I resigned myself to the fate of frumpy clothing that didn’t really fit.

But the truth is, no matter what is out there or not, I am in control of my clothes.

 Act. Don’t be acted upon.

Don’t be afraid to march into your closet and take back control of your wardrobe.  If you want red pants and you can’t find the right pair that fit and flatter you, dye your own.  Who cares if all the pants are too long, learn to hem them.  Who says that dress can only be worn as a dress, tuck it in and make it a blouse.  And if you want something that no one makes, buy yourself an inexpensive machine and learn how to sew it yourself.

Don’t think because someone else might do it better, that you can’t do it at all.  Everyone’s a novice when they start.

And last of all, never let what your wearing dictate how you feel about yourself.  Beauty, true beauty is born out of the confidence of understanding who you truly are and liking yourself.

That doesn’t come on a hanger.

I can totally relate to being cold all.the.time. I typically have a hot sack (http://www.thehotsacks.com/Hot_Sacks/Home.html) with me at all times in the house during the fall/winter/spring months because I am that cold. You can make your own…just corn in a cotton bag. So worth it! I am totally bringing fleece back in a bad way.

What a sweet husband you have. I remember when I was younger I loved to sit in the bath for ever, with the warm water running on my feet. But then the hot water would run out and I would still need to rinse. A couple of times this happened, my mother was so wonderful and boiled a couple pots of hot water to pour on me and rinse me off.

  9. Your Mr. is the best. I wonder if mine would do that for me. Not that I would currently bathe in our apt’s tub. But it does have HOT water. I like scalding too. :)

I loved the story about your husband and the pots of water. It was so sweet, and it reminded me of my mom, because when I was a kid, my mom used to do that for me, because our hot water heater was never hot enough, and I was always cold. :)

Well said! I also am super petite – 4’11 – and can NEVER find clothes. You’ve inspired me to take charge of my appearance…I really have no excuse for only owning a couple jeans, a few shirts, and no skirts. My sewing machine must be put to work! Thanks!
