the epitome of Hannah.

Menswear, I tell you what.  When you want to be comfy and not in sweatpants, this is where it’s at…

Boyfriend Chinos/ Scarf: Old Navy.  V-neck: The Loft. Oxfords: Target.  Cardigan: Aero.  Belt: Mr.’s  Fedora: Kohls.

And now a little story:

Everyday at 3 o’clock I walk four houses down to the corner of our neighborhood.  At 3:04 the bus pulls up and I wait, watching as the children start piling off until I can pick out the shoes of my oldest 2 littles hopping off the bottom step and onto the wet asphalt.  Then I watch them from across the road as they wait for the bus driver to hail them across the street.  I can usually tell by their faces what kind of day they had at school.

And today, Hannah’s face was all wrong.

I knew it the minute I looked at her, she had that look where you’ve been being brave all day and now you’re looking at mom, and that means it’s okay to cry.  (This still happens to me when I’ve had a bad day and my mom calls.)  By the time she reached me she was all but in tears.  She buried her face into my stomach and let out a delicate little sob.  “I lost my lunchbox today!” (hiccup)

“What happened to it?” I asked.

“I don’t know, I had it in the lunchbox bin and then when I went to get it out it was gone.”

(sad sad face.)

Side note: I’m a homemade lunch kind of mom, you know peanut butter and jelly and such.  Which is great because Miss Hannah, she’s a homemade lunch kind of girl.  She loathes buying lunch.

“I had to buy lunch and there was no money on my lunch account and so the lunch lady had to give me a purple slip.” Apparently getting a purple slip is really embarrassing.

(home run on my part right there- note to self: always have back-up lunch money on the account in case lunch goes missing)

“But they let you buy lunch?” I ask, trying to make sure she had actually eaten.

“Uh huh.” (another hiccup)

We’re walking home now.

“Well, what did you get?” (distraction is the key to calming irrational females at any age)

“Pasta.”

Oh good, this is a positive, Hannah looooves pasta.

“Pasta, huh?”

“Yeah, and it was disgusting.” (small wail, another hiccup)

Sometimes, it’s just hard to be seven.

When we got inside I scooped her up onto my lap on the chair next to the fireplace, and talked to her about how all these silly things don’t matter.  That it wasn’t her fault or mine that her lunch went missing; sometimes these things just happen.  She didn’t have to be embarrassed, and yes, mom will pay for the lunch she ate.  Then I made her stick by me all afternoon, because somehow when you’re a little girl and you had a bad day at school all you need is time with mom.

Then this evening, I messed up dinner.

I don’t know what happened but I’m pretty sure that I added 1 and 3/4 cup of water to the mix when I was only supposed to add 3/4 of a cup.  That’s what I get for cooking and talking on the phone at the same time.  When I realized my error, I stood staring down at the mess and boy I really wanted to get frustrated.  I started shaking my head and said “Oh shoot.  I think I just ruined dinner.”

Hannah, standing next to me, looks up, smiles, shrugs and shakes her head a little, then says:

“This life, it just happens that way sometimes.  I mean, I lost my lunch box today.”

All I could think was, “I do not deserve this child.”

Anything I give that little comes back tenfold, time and time again.

That is the epitome of Hannah.

They do listen, even when you think they don’t – and little girls especially. My two and a half year old repeats my advice back to me, as well. And boy, some days I need it! Thank you for reminding all of us that even us mothers are fallible – but never to the point of failing :-)
