We were supposed to have a very different weekend than we had.  It was one of those Saturdays where our to-do list was long, and we were going to get a hundred things done, and then we just decided to cancel them all and drive out for a day on the coast.  I love those little spontaneous adventures.  That’s where the best memories happen.

I literally couldn’t wipe the giant grin off my face in these pictures and I’m not even sorry about it.  The coast just makes me happy.  It makes my kids happy.  Ava digs in that powder soft sand to her heart’s content, the big kids just around in the waves, chasing them back and forth and getting soaked my the freezing water.  Craig tries to get everyone interested in flying the kite (no one ever is…) and then fills us all with glee driving our 8-seater like a madman over the sand, busting through puddles where the tide is coming in while the kids bounce around on the seats in the back.  (My car is still coated in salt water)  As for me, I feel something inside me fill up again as soon as the sound of the waves crashing on the shore touches my ears.

I love a day on the beach, especially here in Washington.

But let’s be clear about one thing.  If you head to the beach in the Pacific Northwest, in September, you don’t bring your bathing suit.  You bring your layers.

Actually the beaches in the PNW are pretty much chilly year round, so… consider yourself warned.

I love this outfit.  It’s so basic, black jeans, striped tee, a great classic trench, but it’s also so me.  I love basics, and more specifically I love fall basics. I think it’s so important to know yourself, and wear what makes you happy.

Great basics make me happy, and so do fancy dresses, and funky pants, and good graphic tees.  I long ago stopped trying to fit myself in a box.  If I did, I would be some bizarre fashion hybrid of classic, meets feminine, meets tomboy.

If you had to put yourself in a fashion “box” what would you be?

And just in case you were wondering how I got these killer beach waves… I curled my hair and went to a super windy beach.

    Hi Cori,
That trench looks amazing on you. Curious as to what size it is. Is it Petite or Regular?

I’ve always called my style “sparkly boy.” I love Blazers with sequins under, brown leather oxfords with pretty blush pink on top. I die over military with bling. Love your beach pics!
