the best fall and winter shoes for kids.

Ava’s outfit: sweatshirt. jeans. boots. similar hat.

My outfit: Sweater. boots. similar vest. jeans.

There are a few things in life that I’ve gotten really good at.  One of them is outfitting children.  In fact, after 4 kids and 13 years, I consider myself kind of an expert at knowing exactly what you do and don’t need for kids.  I don’t claim this lightly, it took a lot of useless misguided purchases before I honed my skills as a mom-buyer, but by the time Ava came along, I was practically a ninja when it came to kid purchases.

Here’s my very simple theory for buying kids clothes and shoes.  They don’t need that much.  That’s it.  Since kids only wear clothes and shoes for one maybe two seasons (if you’re lucky and have slow-growing kids like me) they don’t need as many clothes.  They need a good capsule.  Simple quality pieces that mix and match with each other, that they can wear to literal death.  It’s about buying less more intentionally.

This system made Ava’s infancy run so much smoother, it saved me a lot of money and made me way happier as a mom because I was dealing with way less stuff.  That is why I’ve adopted that method of buying for all my kids and seriously life has never been better.

So today, I want to talk about the 3 (yes, only 3) types of kid’s shoes your little ones need for fall and winter. (with a bonus pair if you live in a cold climate where it snows.)

1.Rain boots.  Rain boots are my favorite type of shoe for kids, because they are so versatile.  They work in all kinds of weather and situations.  They’re just as good for a romp in the yard as they are at the mall, and really you can kind of dress them up or down.  You can even throw on some boot liners and they’ll work in the snow.  I’m a total Hunter boots enthusiat, they’re totally worth the investment to me because they are cute, versatile and extrememly well made.  These boots last, and if you have more than one kid you can pass them down.  If you’re not wanting to spend quite that much, there are some less expensive options as well. Here are my favorites:

2. Sneakers.  I feel like sneakers don’t even really need an explanation because every kid needs a pair of sneakers for running around and playing in, no matter the season.  P.E. to playground this is a childhood basic.  Here are my favorite kid sneakers below–that are also easy to get on chubby feet. (you’re welcome ;-)

3. Leather Boots.  I promise this isn’t redundant.  A pair of leather boots, whether it’s riding boots or booties for girls or just a good pair of leather boots for boys work for a lot of situations from school to church, to Thanksgiving dinner.  Plus they’ll keep those toesies warm.  Here are some of my favorites:

Bonus: Snow Boots. (if you live in a cold climate.)
