brighten up.

sweater. coat. scarf. jeans. hunter boots. lipstick (color: snob.) ice skates.

It’s usually at about this point in winter when I start hearing over and over, how ready everyone is for spring.  And I get it. I mean, even I get sick of being cold.  And also, we’re finally going to plant a garden this year and I’m anxious to get started… The problem is, for a lot of us, spring is still a month or two, (or three!) away.  So in the spirit of thriving, not just surviving until the popcorn starts popping on the apricot tree, here are three ways to start embracing that spring spirit while there’s still snow on the ground.

Wear some bright colors.  I get very neutral in the winter months, and I’m definitely a fan of those versatile pieces, but I also love some color too.  Don’t be afraid to incorporate some brighter layers into your weekly round-up.  Who knows, you might even fool mother nature into thinking it’s spring. I love wearing pink this time of year (especially since valentines day is coming up) but a fun colorful scarf or sweater in any cheerful color really does the trick.  I wore this cute pom sweater and coordinating scarf last week for a trip to the pond to go ice skating on our snow day.  I sweat the bright colors instantly lifted my mood.  I even wore my favorite summer pink lipstick, because why the heck not?

Plant and inside garden.  If you have a window you have your own mini-green house.  Spare space on a counter will do to plant a few pretty greens to make you feel like you’ve brought the outdoors inside.  If you don’t have spare kitchen space, pick up an inexpensive cart and park it near the window.  Double bonus, plant an herb garden and you’ve got fresh herbs to cook with every night, plus they make your kitchen smell amazing.

Buy yourself some flowers.  On a dark and dreary day, when all else fails, drive yourself over to the grocery store and buy yourself a big bouquet of beautiful blooms.  I used to feel silly buying myself flowers, but not anymore.  They make me happy, they smell nice, and they beautify our home.  Hydrangeas are my favorite flower, but I also love buying peonies when they’re in season or even just some yellow roses.  (What’s your favorite?)

Do you do anything to make it start feeling like spring before the weather turns?

Cori Lynn I needed to see this post so much today! I have had the spring blues soooo bad. I have a pink purse that I have been dying to carry but I’ve held off because it’s a pastel spring color so I was saving. But I love your “why not” attitude! You’ve inspired me to carry it tomorrow and to start wearing bring colors even if the weather is blah! I am not a winter gal at all. Thank you so much for this post! And you are just so stinkin’ cute!
