secrets to styling boyfriend jeans like a pro.

Shirt. Jeans. (similar here and here.) Sneakers. Suede moto jacket. similar backpack. sunglasses. necklace. ring.

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that if a girl is wearing ripped jeans during a family event, one of her elderly relatives is going to give her some flack for it.  It’s a generational thing.  They used to discard their jeans once they got holes in them, now we pay extra for it…

You guys know that boyfriend jeans are my jam.  In fact, they are my peanut butter and jam.  I had no trouble jumping on this trend the second it started years ago and I’ve yet to get off the train.  I’ve said it a million times but boyfriend jeans are a mother’s best friend.

But here’s the thing, I know they can be tricky to style.  I know because I’ve been there in my bedroom trying to style them.  And you’ve told me, you asked me for help and emailed me styling questions and today I’m going to share my secrets for styling boyfriend jeans like a pro.  If I can do it, with my 4’11” frame you can do it too.

First: Start with the fit.  This is the most important secret.  No two bodies are the same, which means, you’re going to have to play around until you find which boyfriend fit works best for you and your body type.  What works for suzy skinny long legs, does not work for Cori-short-and-sweet.  If you know what I mean.  So be okay with ordering a few pairs of jeans to try out.  Try a few at once, shoot a picture in them, and see which ones are the most flattering on you.  If you’re not having any luck finding a good pair in the “boyfriend fit” category, try finding a great pair of distressed skinny jeans and just go up 2 sizes.  I know it sounds crazy, but I swear it works.

here’s some great boyfriends to try (a lot of these come in petites too, fyi):

Second: embrace the distress, it makes the jeans.  Without it, I think boyfriend jeans look kind of sloppy and boring.  Just come to terms with the fact that your grandmother is NEVER going to understand the choice to wear intentionally ripped denim and move get yourself some distressed jeans. They look great on everyone, and they’re fun and perfect for the warmer months.

Third: Don’t roll them too perfectly.  The whole point of a boyfriend jean is to look a little intentionally disheveled, so don’t roll them too uniform.  Have some fun with the cuff.  And if you’re feeling really crazy, you could even cut the bottom off completely and turn them into cropped boyfriend jeans! (Cropped jeans are big this year.)

Last: Dress them up or down.  They great thing about boyfriend jeans is that they look as equally cool with a pair of heels as they do a pair of sneakers.  So style them up or down, depending on your mood, fancy and wear you plan to wear them.  If I’m set for a full day of mom duty, I opt for sneakers and a sweatshirt or a tee and a jacket (as seen here).  If I have casual meetings or errands to run I’ll pair them with a long sweater, a chambray shirt and a pair of loafers or slides.  If I’m heading out on a date with my husband I’ll throw them on with a great blouse, a pair of heels and a clutch.

The real key to styling boyfriend jeans is owning the look confidently.  They’re meant to look casual and laid-back so embrace the feeling and have fun with it!

try the high waisted styles! They’re a little more fitted on the waist! I believe Abercrombie has a couple high waisted pairs.

Great tips! Question….I’m on the other side of 55. I’m 5’2 and don’t like to dress like an old lady but I don’t want to look like I’m trying to look like a 20 something. Can I wear jeans like these? I love them, but have yet to own them!
