how to layer in the fall: when it’s cold in the morning and warm in the afternoon.

**Before we get started on today’s post, I am teaching a free fall style class this Thursday (9/19) at 12pm EDT.  I’m going to be sharing practical tips for getting dressed this time of year, this seasons trends, and tips for transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall. I know we’ve all already been feeling the urge to jump the gun on pumpkin everything, but on Saturday it will “officially” be fall so why not talk about it today, shall we?  I love getting dressed in the fall, it’s when I get to wear all my favorite things, sweaters and jackets, cozy flannels, and don’t even get me started on boots.  A couple weeks ago I reached out to you all over on my instagram stories for your questions and pain-points around transitioning your wardrobe to fall.  I got lots of responses but the one I got the most was, “How to get dressed when it cold in the morning, hot in the afternoon, and cold again in the evening?”  So I thought today I would address this one!  (Sign up for my fun little fall style class later this week, I’ll be sharing more ideas, tips and answering more of your questions then!)

Getting dressed in September can be tricky because the weather is constantly oscillating between summer and fall.  One day the high is 70 degrees and I feel like jumping in a big pile of leaves, the next day it’s 85 and I’m grudgingly pulling my summer pieces back out.  The trickiest days are the ones where the weather changes dramatically through out the day.  Fall in the morning, summer in the afternoon, fall again in the evening.  How do you get dress for a day like that?  My solution: light layers!

On days when the weather is going to vary between warm and cold, I use light layers to get dressed. This way you can peel them off or put them back on throughout the day as needed.  The key to using layers is making sure that each layer can stand on it’s own two feet and still look like a complete outfit.  For this outfit, I layered a little striped tee with a chambray top, and then a rust colored coatigan.  I chose some fun leopard shoes to add a pop, and pulled all the pieces together with a little bandana.

Make sure, as you’re peeling layers off through the day, you are making adjustments so the outfit still feels pulled together.  If you’re wearing a button up shirt under a sweater and you peel off the sweater, front tuck the shirt and cuff the sleeves, maybe tie the sweater around your waist or over your shoulders.    With this outfit, while it’s cool in the morning, I’ve got all the layers on: sweater, chambray shirt, tee.  If it warms a little, I can peel of the sweater and cuff the sleeves on the chambray shirt.  It still feels like a complete outfit.  When it warms even more, I can peel off the chambray shirt, tie it around my waist and throw the bandana around my neck.  And again it still feels like a complete outfit.  Making those little adjustments goes a long way to making an outfit still feel pulled together.

A little print mixing also goes a long way to help each layered look feel complete.  I highly recommend adding some leopard shoes to your fall capsule, they pair really well with a lot of different colors and prints and will make even simple layered looks feel intentional and complete.

I hope you enjoyed this post today and that it gives you some ideas for getting dressed!  If you’d like some more fun ideas for getting dressed this fall, or just want to come hang out and talk all things pumpkin spice with me, make sure and sign up for my free fall style class this Thursday.  It’s going to be fun!
