easy English crumpets recipe (with Hannah)

Hi Guys!  I am so excited to share the easiest and yummiest English crumpet recipe with you today!  Hannah has been making these for our family over the last couple weeks, and oh my goodness are they good.  She Kindly agreed to come on here and teach us all how to make them today!

I’m sure you’ve all heard of crumpets, but if you’ve never actually had one and you’re wondering what the heck a crumpet actually is; basically if an English muffin and a pancake had a baby you’d get a crumpet.  And they are completely scrumptious.  Every single person in our family LOVES them.

These crumpets don’t require very many ingredients; in fact you probably have everything you need already in your fridge and cupboard.  The batter is also very quick and easy to mix up.  There’s a little proving time and the cooking takes a little time and care, but it’s a pretty easy and straightforward recipe.

This recipe was found in Hannah’s Unofficial Harry Potter cookbook.  She got this for Christmas and has been having a ball baking recipes from it.   If you’re a Harry Potter fan I highly recommend grabbing the cookbook, it’s darling and the recipes are quite good.

For this recipe we are using my Kitchenaid Mixer, our large electric griddle, and crumpet/English muffin rings.  If you don’t have crumpet rings you can try any metal round form, although I highly recommend getting some crumpet rings if you want to make these even once or twice a year.  (Plus you can use them for other things as well, like cutting out biscuits.) But honestly, these crumpets are so good you’ll want to make them way more often than that… ;-). I like to use our large electric griddle because there is lots of space to cook multiple crumpets at once, and the heat stays even and consistent the whole time.

You’ll need: flour, sugar, yeast, salt, whole milk and butter, that’s it!

{Full recipe is at the bottom of the post.}

First step, you’ll want to grease 4 crumpet rings and a skillet or griddle. Whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt untill combined. Add the milk and melted butter and mix until smooth. Cover and leave in warm place to prove for 1-1.5 hours. Batter should be puffy and risen.

Stir down the mixture. Heat the greased griddle and put the crumpet rings on it.Using a measuring cup, pour 1/3 cup of batter into each ring.Cook over low heat until the tops fill with holes, about 5 minutes.Carefully remove the crumpet rings and flip the crumpets over, (they should be pale brown on the bottom) and cook until the other side is pale brown. (about 5 minutes more)

Once cooked, toast the crumpets until golden brown and serve with butter and jam, honey, lemon curd, or powdered sugar.Or try them with a savory topping like ricotta, basil and tomato.

Crumpets can be made ahead, refridgerated and toasted at serving time.  They make a great brunch or shower treat because you can make a bunch ahead and just toast them right before serving.

    Crushing fierce on your daughter’s apron! Love crumpets and can’t wait to try these. Ages ago I cut both ends from tuna cans to make cheap crumpet rings. It worked very well as an alternative to hunting them down at a store.
