Creating a Character in your Home through Pattern and Texture.

If your home lacks character and you want your spaces brimming with personality, but the idea of bold paint colors leave you feeling hesitant, there’s a design solution for you. And the good news is, it’s one that doesn’t require a paintbrush: let’s talk the transformative power of pattern and texture.

Strategic use of pattern and texture can elevate your space from simple to sophisticated, injecting depth, character, and a sense of warmth. Let’s explore how to incorporate pattern and texture effectively.

Adding pattern and texture with Textiles.

Textiles are a perfect starting point if you want to add pattern and texture to your home. Imagine your home as a canvas, but instead of paint, you have a collection of great fabrics. Layering different patterns and textures with textiles can add depth and character to otherwise simple spaces.  Experiment with textures by layering linens, silks, and wools to create a visually interesting and inviting space. When it comes to patterns the formula I like to use is: large scale, small scale, geometric. For example, I might do throw pillows with a larger floral, a smaller floral, and a plaid. Don’t shy away from subtle patterns either, they can add texture as well. If you’re feeling overwhelmed adding patter, try staying in the same color family, or sticking with neutrals and using the formula I shared above.

Rugs: Adding pattern and texture to the Foundation of the space.

Rugs serve as the perfect platform for texture exploration. A woven sisal rug introduces a natural element, while a plush shag rug creates a cozy feel. Consider adding a vintage or vintage inspired floral rug to instantly add pattern and character to a space, or opt for a bold geometric pattern to make a statement. The right rug will anchor a room and unify the patterns and textures.

Beyond the Fabric.

Adding depth and texture to a space extends well beyond textiles. Consider adding woven baskets and metallic accents like unlaquered brass light fixtures or taper candleholders. And never underestimate the power of plants, to breathe life and character into any environment.

Maintaining Harmony:

While embracing pattern and texture is a great way to add character to your home, achieving balance is key. An overabundance of these can create a visually overwhelming space. A helpful strategy is to maintain a limited color palette, even when incorporating patterns. The textures and patterns must work together to create harmony in a space.

By incorporating these tips for adding pattern and texture, you can transform your home into a space overflowing with character, even without adding bold colors. (Although, ps. adding color to your home is pretty great, and you should definitely try it.)
