start spreading the news…

Let’s all give Gap a collective high five for this most perfect cobalt maxi dress shall we?  Which also happens to be the most comfortable piece of clothing I have ever worn.  Not kidding.

Next Wednesday, Mr and I are going to New York.  I’m trying not to think about how homesick I got for my littles while on our 2 day trip to Victoria a few weeks ago, because this one is quite a bit longer.

But really, I’m so excited.

I’ve actually never been to New York.  Born and bred on the West coast I’ve rarely been back east, and even then, never to the Big Apple, which I’ve also been slightly obsessed with for most of my teen/adult life.  Pretty much ever since I saw “You’ve Got Mail” in high school.  I realize that it’s probably a bit pathetic that it’s taken me until my 29th year to make this trip happen, but who cares.  I’m going to New York!

So here’s my question for you: what is like your most favorite, can’t miss thing to do in NYC?

I want all you East-coasters, New Yorkers, and really just anyone who’s been there, to give me your top New York picks.

Where do you like to eat, visit, stay, shop, etc. etc?

Ready, set, go.

Dress: Gap. Belt: Downeast Basics. Headband: Banana Republic.  Watch: NY&Co. Sunnies: Loft.  Bag: Liz Claiborne(thrifted). Necklace: The Vintage Pearl.

PS. I totally have Sinatra stuck in my head now, and it’s making me seriously happy.  Woot, woot.

Eat in Little Italy at Benito II. I have gone there with my now husband over the last 14 years. He went to West Point and we would go there on dates when I came to see him in the city. It’s a family oriented restaurant, small and they are so friendly. Oh- and the food is delicious! Have SO much fun! New York, New York, a city so nice they named it twice :)

  2. So much fun! As a born and bred NY-er currently missing my fair city, let me share some of my favorite haunts:
-Central Park boating. You’re in the most beautiful park in the middle of the busiest city in the world, and on a boat. Doesn’t get better than that.
-the Tenement Museum and the Lower East Side.
    -The Cloisters
    -The Met

Make time to just walk around…especially Central Park and the Village. Magnolia Bakery on Bleeker Street. Go to the top of the Empire State Building at night. The Met is awesome if you like art. Watch a Broadway show (or 2 or 5). Enjoy! NYC is an awesome place to visit!

I went to NYC the summer after high school, pre 911, so I’m sure a lot has changed. I would for sure check out the central park zoo and go to time square and buy a “I love NY” shirt there. Also check out a Broadway or off Broadway show if possible–1/2 tickets are ususally available for unsold seats the day of the show. (At least thats how I remember it) Take LOTS of pictures!!! :)

If you want a really romantic evening with the best view of NYC, cross the Hudson to Weehawkin, NJ, there is a park along the Hudson, and you can see the sun literally set over the city. This would be perfect for the first timer because it’s really captivating, and free =)

    Happy travels…

i just visited ny for the 1st time a few weeks ago! check out my photo post on it!

it will be HOTT! so dress comfy as there will be plenty of walking!! if youre doing a quick trip, the hop-on/hop-off tour is a quick way to see everything – the tour points out the ‘when harry met sally’ restaurant.

grays papaya & the shake shack were yummy places to eat. uniqlo was my must see shopping stop. the met was amazing but takes a while to get through – when you get in, there are ‘suggested entrance fees’ but the minimum you have to do is $1!! time square was overrated, very crowded but as a 1st timer, still cool. carry hand sanitizer!!

have fun and hope to see a blog post on your trip!!

A Broadway show…many of them are brilliant, but anything by Disney is incredible. Not sure what’s playing right now, but you really can’t go wrong.

Also, take the Staten Island Ferry over to (you guessed it), Staten Island. It’s free and provides some really pretty views of the city. And makes me think of How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.

I live right outside the city that never sleeps and there is so much to see, depending on how long your going to be there you should try to go see a broadway show if possible. Currently Wicked is my favorite, but all are really good. You should also try to do an many of the typical tourist-ey things as possible go to times square (I wouldn’t eat in times square it tends to be mainly chain restaurants or over priced places), visit the Statue of Liberty, see central park, the museums are also amazing. MoMa is one of my favorite but Met is also a can’t miss. As for eating, you should try Becco for great Italian and Mesa Grill is another favorite of mine. Have an amazing time and Can’t wait to hear all about it!!

Growing up in NYC I took for granted all the yummy food there!
For the absolutely best west Indian curry take the A train to Lefferts ave in queens and go to the restaurant under the train with the yellow sign.
Best burgers: go to shake shack or j.g. Melons
Best dark chocolate chip cookie experience: Levain’s bakery
Best sloppy Joe and chocolate malt: Shnipper’s near times square
Best cheesecake: Junior’s either in Brooklyn or near times square they have a shop.
Best pizza deal: tommy’s pizza in queens on lefferts ave. In south ozone park-on Tuesday’s (they may have changed to Wednesday’s) get a huge pie for like $6.
Whatever you do, don’t eat in any of the nationwide chains littering the tourist areas!

  13. I lived in the city for a few years and I still go back often.

I 100% agree with the comment above. Do NOT eat in Times Square. The restaurants there aren’t great and jack up the prices for tourists that don’t know any better.

Some of my favorite restaurants are: China Grille (chinese), Primehouse (steak), Stanton Social (tapas), Norma’s (brunch), and One if By Land, Two if By Sea (very romantic). I strongly suggest calling restaurants and making reservations now. Many of the good ones will be booked!

My favorite part of NYC was seeing a Broadway show. We saw Wicked, not sure what is playing now. We ate at a fabulous pizza place right across from the theatre (I think it was called Angelos). Get cheesecake from Roxy’s!

Food can be really expensive, but if you hit up some of the delis for lunch, they are fabulous. And the bakeries (hit up Levine for the ginormous cookies)!! I will admit that I didn’t love Times Square because it was so crowded, but they do have some fun shops.

We took the double decker red bus tour — totally a tourist thing — but it gave us a taste and history of the entire city (and you can get on and off as you please). When we hit the uptown loop (I think that is where anyways) I was absolutely in love with all of the brownstone apartment type building. Amazing.

The day we went to Central Park it was pouring down rain, but I would have loved to explore more.
We went to a few museums, which were neat.

If you go to Serendipity, often you need a reservation. I have heard of people having a reservation and still getting denied. Who knows! When we were there we saw Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin :)

My husband was in love with a restaurant called the Blue Smoke — bbq place, but nice. I remember eating at a funky eatery called the Commune Kitchen which served every kind of panini you could imagine. But I can’t remember most of the places we ate.

Sorry about this super long post. Hope you have a fabulous time!

  28. My mother is a native New Yorker and though I was raised on the West Coast, we took a ton of trips back east when I was growing up.

    Top 5

    1. Zabar’s
This would top my list no matter what, but you will like that it’s the grocery store in You’ve Got Mail where Meg Ryan tries to avoid Tom Hanks. It’s on the Upper West Side, which is a really cool neighborhood to walk around. You must go to the deli on the side of the grocery store and sample all the traditional Jewish deli classics: lox & cream cheese on a bagel, whitefish salad, blintzes, and potato knishes.

    2. Century 21
Across from Ground Zero, this is a discount department store. Allot 4 hours minimum.

    3. Canal Street
Bordering Chinatown, this street is where you can find lots of cheap jewelry, purses, etc. Haggling is a must. For a scenic (read: shopping) walk, saunter through SoHo on your way.

    4. Metropolitan Museum of Art
Pick an area of interest and explore that or take a tour. You can’t see it all in one trip.

    5. Natural History Museum
The most amazing gem collection I have ever seen.

    6. Central Park
Get a map and wander around. Don’t miss Belvedere Castle or Bethesda Fountain

    7. Macy’s
It’s a whole city block of fabulousness. I bought 7 pairs of shoes the last time I was there. Yes, I know I have a problem.

Overrated: Little Italy. They don’t actually speak Italian in most of those places anymore, they speak Spanish. (Nothing wrong with Spanish, it’s just not called Little Puerto Rico.)

  30. Okay, I was born and grew up in Chelsea in Manhattan. I moved at 27. I love Chelsea! Between 10th and 11th avenues from approximately 25th to 14th streets are tons of art galleries. There is also an overhead train track that was converted to a park. It extends from 23rd street also to 14th street, you can take fabuloso pictures from it. On 16th street between 9th and 10th avenues is Chelsea Market an indoor market with baked goods, seafood, fresh bread, flowers and oooh an Anthropologie. On 14th street between 10th and 9th is the meatpacking district – however, it’s been converted to a really bougey store area. I really think you will love to see these things. Have fun! B. Bivens

Will you be here on a Saturday or a Sunday? You must, must, MUST go to the Brooklyn Flea and you MUST eat a doughnut. Of each flavor they have, please.
You must also go to SoHo and let the Mister buy you a “its summer in New York and I’m walking around pregnant” gift (I suggest Kate Spade, which is my favorite store to stand in ever).
Also you must eat a falafel from Mamoun’s in the Village! And you must put your feet in the fountain at Washington Square Park (can you tell I’m a Village Girl?).
And you must go to Times Square in the dark because the lights are just startling.
Enjoy it and if I happen to see you in my neighborhood I might stop you and say hello :)

Yay! So exciting – love NYC. I was there for a very short time and LOVED Central Park (and buying from the vendors there), the free Staten Island Ferry, Grand Central Station (just walking through it is fun to me – it’s so huge!), and ditto to “Jordan and Maci’s” comment – Grimaldi’s pizza on the Brooklyn side under the Brooklyn Bridge is AWESOME. Long lines (you will see the line on the sidewalk out front), but totally worth the wait.

Wear COMFORTABLE footwear. Seriously – you do so much walking even with the subway system that you cannot afford to end up with blisters. And be prepared for random rainstorms. It happens.

Oh yeah – Battery Park is kind of neat (and hey, it is free) – you can look out across the New York harbor and see Liberty Island and Ellis Island. There are often artists sitting out doing portraits and selling paintings.

The Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Plaza) is really cool b/c you can look across the city and see the Empire State Building all lit up. Oh and if you are up for more walking, walking out on the Brooklyn Bridge is cool, too. :)

OK – so there is my chapter. :)

    Hi Cori,

I love NY! My favorite thing to do was renting bicyles at 348 W 57th and riding through Central Park. It was amazing and very safe since bikes and joggers have a road to themselves with street lights and all! MY I also loved our walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, sitting on the Patio balcony of 230 Fifth which is a rooftop bar with the most amazing views of NY and the best view of the Empire State Building — very romantic at night. We also enjoyed Ferrara’s in Little Italy – it has delicious desserts. Boutique shopping and eating at quaint little cafes in Park Slope, Brooklyn Made me want to live there! We also venture to McSorley’s which is the oldest bar in NY. You won’t be sipping a beer, but it is amazing to see how authentic it is… So much history! FAO Schwatrz was awesome too! There is a long line to dance around on the giant keyboard so we didn’t get to do that but I felt like a little kid at Christmas again (I’m 28.. Going on 29 too)! SoNo shopping was interesting but I wasn’t crazy about all the knockoffs and cheaply made clothing.. Although i do regret not buying perfume there because the prices were so good (haggle!). We were visiting for so long that we would just take the subway and randomly hop out considering that we semi-recognized the area to not be dangerous of course. My biggest regret was not getting to go to Chelsea Market. Ooh we did see an off Broadway Show that was amazing and absolutely hilarious. And Times Square was a sight to see at dark. There is so much to do that you will have a blast with whatever you choose. Have fun!!

  54. New York is the best! I got to do an internship there a couple of summers ago and just loved it. As far as things to do you’ve got to go to a Broadway show, walk through central park and of course 5th Avenue. You also can’t miss the MOMA and the MET. SOHO is great for browsing and shopping and while your downtown you can check out Little Italy and China Town as well. And of course the touristy stuff is great too – don’t miss the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, The Empire State Building, Times Square, etc. I’m biased because I interned there, but go see a taping of the Today Show in Rockefeller Center. You won’t be able to go in the studio but the anchors are almost always out on the plaza during the summer. There are soooo many good restaurants but my favorites are Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn for THE BEST pizza (walk the bridge and then head here! you won’t regret it!), Sarabeth’s on the upper west side for brunch, Serendipity and Max Brenner for dessert, Carnegie Deli for sandwiches and cheesecake the size of your head, and Shake Shack for amazing burgers. Have so much fun! You will love it!
