Well, our monster of a storm that we were supposed to have over the weekend proved to be a disappointment, but I ended up staying in all day on Saturday baking with my kids and getting cozy so I can’t complain too much about that.  I love a good cozy fall weekend.  Don’t you?

And before you say anything, yes.  I am wearing this dress again.  What can I say, when I get something new (and it’s as versatile as this striped dress) and I really love it, I just want to wear it over and over again.

This was one of those purchases that I could instantly style like 10 different ways in my head and that got me thinking about the really great versatile pieces in my closet.  Here are three I think every woman should have:

1.An everyday dress.  Dresses that can be worn on the daily are such an asset to your closet, especially when you need to look put together in a pinch.  In a hurry.  Throw on a dress, some boots and a jacket and you will look like a million bucks for a minimal effort.  I love wearing dresses in the fall because there are so many fun ways to layer them.  An everyday dress is something versatile and casual that you can style with boots, flats, booties or even sneakers and wear when you just do life.  Shirt, sweater, shift, and swing dresses are all great silhouettes that work perfectly.  If I can run errands with my toddler, and make dinner, and pick up my house then the dress passes the everyday dress test.

2.A denim jacket.  Talk about a layer that goes with literally everything.  I have never regretted my denim jacket purchase.  And really, these were so popular when I was in high school and they have been ever since.  You can always throw on a denim jacket.  My advice when purchasing: avoid extreme washes (like an acid wash-yuck) and go for a nice medium wash.  It’s the most versatile and if you find a jacket with a good classic fit (i.e. not too cropped) you will wear it forever.

3.Riding boots.  I didn’t wear these much last year because I was having a little love affair with all my booties but the truth is, riding boots are a timeless classic.  They can be worn in so many ways and with so many different pieces and they’re actually quite practical for the colder months.  If you buy a good quality pair and care for the leather, they will last you for years and years.  I bought these boots right before Ava was born 4 years ago and they still look amazing.  I get compliments every time I wear them.    I lean towards cognac because it’s the ultimate versatile color (literally goes with everything), but I’d love to add a great black pair to my closet as well.
