my family’s favorite fondue recipe.

One of our favorite memories from our trip to Europe with our kids in 2018, was having fondue in the Swiss mountain town of Zermatt at the foot of the Matterhorn, after hiking through the alps all day. The cheese, the bread, the location… such a special moment and memory for all of us. Since returning home fondue nights have become one of our favorite traditions.

Finding a family friendly fondue recipe (i.e. no alcohol) turned out to be a little tricky, so I combined a few and tweaked until I created one that was not only super delicious, but also tastes just like the real thing. This fondue is so delicious, tastes authentically like Swiss fondue, and is such a fun easy idea for a date night or a family night. You will definitely want a fondue set with this meal (the cheese starts to harden if you don’t keep it hot and melty). Here are a bunch of great fondue set options:

Craig brought home our fondue kit from Switzerland last January after a work trip, and we have used it at least 6 times since. It’s one of our favorite family dinners for birthdays, game days, and holidays. (And it’s a great Valentine’s Day idea!)

Here’s the recipe: (printable version at the bottom!)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups lightly packed shredded Gruyere cheese (about 8 ounces)
  •  1 1/2 cups lightly packed shredded Swiss cheese (about 6 ounces)
  •  2 tablespoons cornstarch
  •  1 cup chicken broth
  •  1 tablespoon finely minced or pressed garlic
  •  1/4 teaspoon ground black or white pepper
  •  1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  •  1/4 teaspoon of paprika

Directions:

Place both the shredded Gruyere and Swiss cheeses in a gallon bag  or bowl with the cornstarch toss until evenly coated.

In a stovetop-safe fondue pot add the chicken broth, and garlic and bring to a simmer.

Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add the cheese, a small handful at a time, stirring constantly. Use a wooden spoon and and stir in a figure 8 motion.

Once the cheese is melted add the remaining spices and move it immediately to the table on the fondue stand with the sterno flame below. It should be the consistency of warm honey.

Serve with crusty bread (sourdough is our favorite), roasted veggies or sausage!
