I’m not shy on here about my love for capsule wardrobes. I love to advocate for a simplified approach to building a closet because I know it’s been life-changing for you guys too. So let’s talk one of my favorite capsule must-have today: the white button down shirt.
What makes a white button down a great capsule piece.
So let’s talk about what makes a white button down such a great capsule piece. First of all, they are super versatile. You can style them so many different ways through different seasons, they make a great foundation, but still look totally chic worn on their own.
They’re a total classic. A great white button down will never go out of style, and if you make sure and purchase a high quality one it will last and be worn for years and years.
They are so easy to style. Wear them on their own, over a dress, under a sweater, as a swim coverup… There are limitless ways to style this great capsule piece.
What I look for in a white button down for my capsule.
When it comes to what I am looking for in a white button down, I always focus on fit and fabric. I prefer a bit of a more classic, relaxed Oxford fit in a 100% cotton. I find they tuck, lay and last much better than shirts with a blend and I want something that I can live in.
And the one thing that’s a deal breaker for me when it comes to a white button down top, it cannot be see-through. I don’t want to have to wear a cami underneath, and it’s just so high maintenance when you’re shirt is see-through. No thank you. Sticking with slightly thicker Oxford varieties makes it easier to find a great option.
