I’ve been promoting the benefits of capsule wardrobes for several years now at this point, but now that I am expecting, it’s clearer than ever how useful they are and how very much a good capsule foundation can serve you, even through the rounder seasons…
Let’s look at this outfit 3 different ways for example today. Every item I am wearing below is from my non-maternity wardrobe, in my regular size, and even at 5 months pregnant they’re still working overtime for me. I can create three completely different looks with the exact same outfit foundation, but by switching up my third piece, shoes, bag, and accessories. That’s an effective capsule foundation in my book, and it’s made avoiding unnecessary maternity clothes purchases possible, which is a nice bonus.
outfit #1: sporty.
black linen pants. white tee. denim jacket. court sneakers. bag.
For these 3 outfits I’m starting with the same basic top and bottom foundation. These awesome linen pants and my favorite Madewell tee.(Get 3 for $45 here.) If I wasn’t pregnant, I would wear the pants high waisted (as they’re meant to be worn) and front tuck the tee.
I am thanking my lucky stars that I found these black linen pants at the earlier this year. They have carried be beautifully through spring and summer and the first 5 months of pregnancy. I suspect I’ll be able to fit into them for at least another month, and I know they’re going to make awesome regular pants as well. I’ve rolled them down to wear under my belly here, but I love that they are high waisted while still being relaxed and know they’ll be super cute with a front tucked top next spring after I have the bean. If you are looking for some great linen pants but want a straighter or more slim silhouette, Old Navy has a great option at a great price right here.
For the first outfit I paired the foundation with a medium denim jacket (this one is a favorite, and so affordable), a pair of sneakers (the court sneaker is my go-to), and a little cross-body bag. I love a good casual sporty look, and this one is pulled together while still being comfy and mom-friendly.
outfit #2: elevated.
Sophie sweater blazer.(on sale today) similar nude flats. bag.
It’s no secret that the Sophie sweater blazer is one of my all-time favorite capsule pieces. (It’s on sale for under $100 right now) I’m excited to style this with my belly all fall. It’s great for creating a long line, and is a super easy way to elevate any outfit. Here I paired it with some loafer mules and a simple bag (I switched out the strap on this crossbody to the leather strap for a sleeker more elevated look). Great for a casual date night.
outfit #3: casual.
similar striped button up. tkees flip flops. bag.
Adding an easy button down is a great way to change up a simple outfit, and a striped button down is a capsule must have. I threw on some elevated flip-flops here to keep the look extra casual. It’s a great late summer combination.
There you go! One outfit, styled three ways. I hope these gave you some ideas for how to work your closet, and build a capsule that serves you.
