Eat in Little Italy at Benito II. I have gone there with my now husband over the last 14 years. He went to West Point and we would go there on dates when I came to see him in the city. It’s a family oriented restaurant, small and they are so friendly. Oh- and the food is delicious! Have SO much fun! New York, New York, a city so nice they named it twice :)
So much fun! As a born and bred NY-er currently missing my fair city, let me share some of my favorite haunts:
-Central Park boating. You’re in the most beautiful park in the middle of the busiest city in the world, and on a boat. Doesn’t get better than that.
-the Tenement Museum and the Lower East Side.
-The Cloisters
-The Met
Make time to just walk around…especially Central Park and the Village. Magnolia Bakery on Bleeker Street. Go to the top of the Empire State Building at night. The Met is awesome if you like art. Watch a Broadway show (or 2 or 5). Enjoy! NYC is an awesome place to visit!
I went to NYC the summer after high school, pre 911, so I’m sure a lot has changed. I would for sure check out the central park zoo and go to time square and buy a “I love NY” shirt there. Also check out a Broadway or off Broadway show if possible–1/2 tickets are ususally available for unsold seats the day of the show. (At least thats how I remember it) Take LOTS of pictures!!! :)
The Big Apple is just so much fun, with so much to do! I went last summer with my roommates! My favorite part by far was a bike ride through Central Park! Also, this sweet lady just got back from NYC and blogged all about it. Check it out! http://nikerunner.blogspot.com/2012/07/nyc-day-six-teaser-911-memorial.html
If you want a really romantic evening with the best view of NYC, cross the Hudson to Weehawkin, NJ, there is a park along the Hudson, and you can see the sun literally set over the city. This would be perfect for the first timer because it’s really captivating, and free =)
Happy travels…
-Melissa G.
ps. I was engaged here. and i’ll never forget how beautiful the city looked.
i just visited ny for the 1st time a few weeks ago! check out my photo post on it!
it will be HOTT! so dress comfy as there will be plenty of walking!! if youre doing a quick trip, the hop-on/hop-off tour is a quick way to see everything – the tour points out the ‘when harry met sally’ restaurant.
grays papaya & the shake shack were yummy places to eat. uniqlo was my must see shopping stop. the met was amazing but takes a while to get through – when you get in, there are ‘suggested entrance fees’ but the minimum you have to do is $1!! time square was overrated, very crowded but as a 1st timer, still cool. carry hand sanitizer!!
have fun and hope to see a blog post on your trip!!

A Broadway show…many of them are brilliant, but anything by Disney is incredible. Not sure what’s playing right now, but you really can’t go wrong.
Also, take the Staten Island Ferry over to (you guessed it), Staten Island. It’s free and provides some really pretty views of the city. And makes me think of How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days.
I live right outside the city that never sleeps and there is so much to see, depending on how long your going to be there you should try to go see a broadway show if possible. Currently Wicked is my favorite, but all are really good. You should also try to do an many of the typical tourist-ey things as possible go to times square (I wouldn’t eat in times square it tends to be mainly chain restaurants or over priced places), visit the Statue of Liberty, see central park, the museums are also amazing. MoMa is one of my favorite but Met is also a can’t miss. As for eating, you should try Becco for great Italian and Mesa Grill is another favorite of mine. Have an amazing time and Can’t wait to hear all about it!!
I’m a NYer who misses her city too! Go to Ellis Island, any of the museums, Max Brenner Chocolatier, eat pizza and bagel! Check out SOHO, there are lots of great stores in that neighborhood (C. Wonder is adorable)
I will be in NYC. on Wednesday! It’s also my first time (hubs went pre 9/11) and you’ve only got 1 year on me. I will keep my eyes peeled for the tiny one with a pregnant belly ;)

Growing up in NYC I took for granted all the yummy food there!
For the absolutely best west Indian curry take the A train to Lefferts ave in queens and go to the restaurant under the train with the yellow sign.
Best burgers: go to shake shack or j.g. Melons
Best dark chocolate chip cookie experience: Levain’s bakery
Best sloppy Joe and chocolate malt: Shnipper’s near times square
Best cheesecake: Junior’s either in Brooklyn or near times square they have a shop.
Best pizza deal: tommy’s pizza in queens on lefferts ave. In south ozone park-on Tuesday’s (they may have changed to Wednesday’s) get a huge pie for like $6.
Whatever you do, don’t eat in any of the nationwide chains littering the tourist areas!
I lived in the city for a few years and I still go back often.
I 100% agree with the comment above. Do NOT eat in Times Square. The restaurants there aren’t great and jack up the prices for tourists that don’t know any better.
Some of my favorite restaurants are: China Grille (chinese), Primehouse (steak), Stanton Social (tapas), Norma’s (brunch), and One if By Land, Two if By Sea (very romantic). I strongly suggest calling restaurants and making reservations now. Many of the good ones will be booked!

The Tiny Heart
I didn’t read all the comments, but if you love “You’ve Got Mail” – go to Cafe Lalo! It’s the coffee shop from the movie where he realizes Kathleen is the girl he’s been e-mailing :)
Also, my husband and I love Carnegie Deli.
Do a dinner cruise on the Hudson River. It will take you by Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. It’s very nice. Enjoy your time in NYC. It’s a fabulous place to be!
LOVE that dress! i love new york. yesss DO NOT eat in times square – SO EXPENSIVE. if you have time to go to brooklyn – any restaurant in park slope is AMAZING!
I’d recommend the Lower Eastside Tenement Museum, especially if you liked A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (http://www.tenement.org/). We really liked Maxie’s by Times Square–they the best chicken Parmesan sandwich I’ve ever had. I dream about it… http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/3/334763/restaurant/Gramercy-Flatiron/Maxies-Bar-Grill-New-York Have a great time!
Brunch at sarabeths!
Oh yeah, and go to Little Italy! Get a cannoli and pizza. Also, go to China Town and see what kind of knock offs you can find!
We love New York. I suggest going to Top of the Rock instead of the top of the Empire State Building because you have a view of Central Park and the Empire State building. Go to Serendipity. Go to Katz’s Deli. Here is a link to my blog posts of my trips to NY if you want to check it out:
Melody’s Voice: Concrete Jungle
Melody’s Voice: Our Bite of the Big Apple
that dress is really fantastic, I am so excited for you to go to New York and wish I had advice but I have never ever been there so I am a bit jealous!! Hope you have a wonderful trip!!

JESS CAUSE BLOG
My favorite part of NYC was seeing a Broadway show. We saw Wicked, not sure what is playing now. We ate at a fabulous pizza place right across from the theatre (I think it was called Angelos). Get cheesecake from Roxy’s!
Food can be really expensive, but if you hit up some of the delis for lunch, they are fabulous. And the bakeries (hit up Levine for the ginormous cookies)!! I will admit that I didn’t love Times Square because it was so crowded, but they do have some fun shops.
We took the double decker red bus tour — totally a tourist thing — but it gave us a taste and history of the entire city (and you can get on and off as you please). When we hit the uptown loop (I think that is where anyways) I was absolutely in love with all of the brownstone apartment type building. Amazing.
The day we went to Central Park it was pouring down rain, but I would have loved to explore more.
We went to a few museums, which were neat.
If you go to Serendipity, often you need a reservation. I have heard of people having a reservation and still getting denied. Who knows! When we were there we saw Lisa Rinna and Harry Hamlin :)
My husband was in love with a restaurant called the Blue Smoke — bbq place, but nice. I remember eating at a funky eatery called the Commune Kitchen which served every kind of panini you could imagine. But I can’t remember most of the places we ate.
Sorry about this super long post. Hope you have a fabulous time!
grew up in Rhode Island, and live in Idaho :) Dunkin donuts, (there is one on evrycorner just like churches in utah) hot dogs stands! and pizza! and of course dont forget the Manhattan Temple! youll drive right by it and not even know!
you look so great here!
eat street food. i know, i know….but seriously, its amazing. have shake shack. that’s amazing too. and have a dunkin donut. at least here in CA, we are deprived. get chestnuts (if they are roasting them) or some honey roasted peanuts or almonds. walk through central park and just people watch. petrossian’s bakery (not the full on expensive restaurant) has lovely brunch.
Carnegie Deli!!!
I am excited about this post because I am going to New York next month and was also looking for things to do. Thanks! Loving the beautiful maxi dress!
Creamy
I’ve lived in New York for three years, and I love it! Don’t do Empire State Building, do Top of the Rock instead. Don’t bother with going to the Statue of Liberty, just walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and get ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream factory. Central Park is a must, as is Shake Shack. My absolute favorite park is the Highline, and you can go to Chelsea Market and Donut Plant nearby. I hope you enjoy the city!
My mother is a native New Yorker and though I was raised on the West Coast, we took a ton of trips back east when I was growing up.
Top 5
1. Zabar’s
This would top my list no matter what, but you will like that it’s the grocery store in You’ve Got Mail where Meg Ryan tries to avoid Tom Hanks. It’s on the Upper West Side, which is a really cool neighborhood to walk around. You must go to the deli on the side of the grocery store and sample all the traditional Jewish deli classics: lox & cream cheese on a bagel, whitefish salad, blintzes, and potato knishes.
2. Century 21
Across from Ground Zero, this is a discount department store. Allot 4 hours minimum.
3. Canal Street
Bordering Chinatown, this street is where you can find lots of cheap jewelry, purses, etc. Haggling is a must. For a scenic (read: shopping) walk, saunter through SoHo on your way.
4. Metropolitan Museum of Art
Pick an area of interest and explore that or take a tour. You can’t see it all in one trip.
5. Natural History Museum
The most amazing gem collection I have ever seen.
6. Central Park
Get a map and wander around. Don’t miss Belvedere Castle or Bethesda Fountain
7. Macy’s
It’s a whole city block of fabulousness. I bought 7 pairs of shoes the last time I was there. Yes, I know I have a problem.
Overrated: Little Italy. They don’t actually speak Italian in most of those places anymore, they speak Spanish. (Nothing wrong with Spanish, it’s just not called Little Puerto Rico.)
Hey Cori!
I just happened to come across your blog today and feel compelled to reply. Seeing a show on Broadway is a must. No matter how many plays and musicals I go to the quality on Broadway blows me away every time. It’s life changing, I promise. Also, I don’t believe anyone mentioned the High Line? You and your husband MUST walk the High Line. It’s free and just really cool. Oh, and don’t forget to load the subway app on your smart phone…you’ll be lost without it!
You look great sweetie, congrats on your 4th!
Love, Mia
Okay, I was born and grew up in Chelsea in Manhattan. I moved at 27. I love Chelsea! Between 10th and 11th avenues from approximately 25th to 14th streets are tons of art galleries. There is also an overhead train track that was converted to a park. It extends from 23rd street also to 14th street, you can take fabuloso pictures from it. On 16th street between 9th and 10th avenues is Chelsea Market an indoor market with baked goods, seafood, fresh bread, flowers and oooh an Anthropologie. On 14th street between 10th and 9th is the meatpacking district – however, it’s been converted to a really bougey store area. I really think you will love to see these things. Have fun! B. Bivens
Will you be here on a Saturday or a Sunday? You must, must, MUST go to the Brooklyn Flea and you MUST eat a doughnut. Of each flavor they have, please.
You must also go to SoHo and let the Mister buy you a “its summer in New York and I’m walking around pregnant” gift (I suggest Kate Spade, which is my favorite store to stand in ever).
Also you must eat a falafel from Mamoun’s in the Village! And you must put your feet in the fountain at Washington Square Park (can you tell I’m a Village Girl?).
And you must go to Times Square in the dark because the lights are just startling.
Enjoy it and if I happen to see you in my neighborhood I might stop you and say hello :)
xx,
Kate from ummmnowwhat.blogspot.com
Walk over the brooklyn bridge…pizza at grimaldis for the full brooklyn experience. Tenement museum is amazing. Crumbs cupcakes white raspberry is worth the trip alone.
Staten island ferry is free and offers an amazing view.
You are just way too cute! We are hoping to have our second baby soon and I can only hope to be as cute as you this time around :) I want to buy one of your skirts for my MIL’s wedding so bad but then it kills me that I’d only get a little use out of it before I was too big for it. I guess it would be good motivation to get back into shape after baby :)
Thats a gorgeous dress! NY is one of the craziest(in a good way) city ever! You will love it there.
that’s a beautiful dress. love the color.
I wish I had some NYC advice, but I’ve never been. I’ll just read everyone’s comments too and continue dreaming about my own visit!
happy travels.
Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge & eat at a place called Grimaldi’s. It’s literally under the bridge and it’s THE BEST PIZZA OUTSIDE OF ITALY! Get there early…they put out velvet ropes & it gets crowded. Also, grab a Gray’s Papaya hot dog while you’re walking around, you’ll see them around the city.
Cheesecake at Junior’s! Get a shake from Shake Shack. Rosa Mexicana. Chelsea Market. The Park. Le Pain Quotidien. Ground Zero. Central Park
Go to eataly! It a very cool place with different small restaurants.
Just went to Gemma’s at the Bowery Hotel on Monday- great Italian food and fantastic service. I recommend you also check out the Highline on the westside (an abandoned railway track recently converted to a park – one of my favorite spots). A must visit is Laduree – NYC’s first outpost of the famed Parisian macaron bakeshop (second to Pierre Herme in my opinion). Oh– and of course, Uniqlo in Soho – great threads at even greater prices!
Have fun :)
As if you haven’t already had enough input, I just emailed you a little (a lot) of information! Have so much fun!
how fun! i am dying to take jordan back there to visit my mission! all of the touristy stuff is awesome (e.g. central park, lady liberty, definitely 5th ave (biggest h&m you have ever seen! makes me drool just thinking about it)), but also make sure to visit the temple–even if you only have time to check out the outside. it’s just incredible that it can stand out, even in a gigantic city like manhattan! also, if you are looking for the best pizza ny has to offer, go to grimaldi’s. it’s right under the brooklyn bridge on the brooklyn side and there is usually a line because people come out of the big city to go there. delicious!!
i’m in love with this dress and your baby belly!
i LOVE new york!! on our way there, sinatra was in my head, too. as well as jay z and alicia keys “empire state of mind”.
go to BROOKLYN HEIGHTS PROMENADE. you will see the NYC skyline and it is to die for! walk around brooklyn heights. it’s beautiful and you actually feel like people do live in new york city. from shows and movies they rag on brooklyn but i actually found it quite charming and lovely.
you can get there once crossing that brooklyn bridge. oh… i love new york so much! AND walk up and down fifth avenue. every shop is on that street. you’ll love it and will have so much fun!
http://www.wewouldlovetoadopt.blogspot.com
you looks so cute in that dress! I can tell how comfy it is because it shows! xo
http://allthingsprettyandlittle.blogspot.com/
Cute dress!! I have got to buy me one ;)
Greeting from http://www.sparklychicjewels.com
Gorgeous! You have the perfect maternity style! Well come to think of it, I would totally rock this dress pregnant or not. I love maxis and how comfy they are!
You are so darn cute, Cori! I just love this dress and especially the color. What a great find.
P.S. Enjoy your trip! I’ve never been to NY either, so I’ll live through your pictures :)
Yay! So exciting – love NYC. I was there for a very short time and LOVED Central Park (and buying from the vendors there), the free Staten Island Ferry, Grand Central Station (just walking through it is fun to me – it’s so huge!), and ditto to “Jordan and Maci’s” comment – Grimaldi’s pizza on the Brooklyn side under the Brooklyn Bridge is AWESOME. Long lines (you will see the line on the sidewalk out front), but totally worth the wait.
Wear COMFORTABLE footwear. Seriously – you do so much walking even with the subway system that you cannot afford to end up with blisters. And be prepared for random rainstorms. It happens.
Oh yeah – Battery Park is kind of neat (and hey, it is free) – you can look out across the New York harbor and see Liberty Island and Ellis Island. There are often artists sitting out doing portraits and selling paintings.
The Top of the Rock (Rockefeller Plaza) is really cool b/c you can look across the city and see the Empire State Building all lit up. Oh and if you are up for more walking, walking out on the Brooklyn Bridge is cool, too. :)
OK – so there is my chapter. :)
BBQ Chix Pizza @ Krunch, Ethiopian @ Queen of Sheba, CCC @ Levain Bakery, Highline Park, Potato Skins @ Serendipity.
My little family and I have been living in NYC this summer and only have two weeks left, so I was excited to read the comments and see what we still need to do! I also highly suggest the Highline and Junior’s cheesecake. My husband took the kids on a rowboat in Central Park and said it was one of the best things he’s done. If you like Broadway shows, the hot new one is “Newsies,” which is really fantastic! You will have so much fun! Prepare for hot weather and lots of walking!
You have to try the cupcakes at Molly’s Cupcakes in SoHO! :D
Hi Cori,
I love NY! My favorite thing to do was renting bicyles at 348 W 57th and riding through Central Park. It was amazing and very safe since bikes and joggers have a road to themselves with street lights and all! MY I also loved our walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, sitting on the Patio balcony of 230 Fifth which is a rooftop bar with the most amazing views of NY and the best view of the Empire State Building — very romantic at night. We also enjoyed Ferrara’s in Little Italy – it has delicious desserts. Boutique shopping and eating at quaint little cafes in Park Slope, Brooklyn Made me want to live there! We also venture to McSorley’s which is the oldest bar in NY. You won’t be sipping a beer, but it is amazing to see how authentic it is… So much history! FAO Schwatrz was awesome too! There is a long line to dance around on the giant keyboard so we didn’t get to do that but I felt like a little kid at Christmas again (I’m 28.. Going on 29 too)! SoNo shopping was interesting but I wasn’t crazy about all the knockoffs and cheaply made clothing.. Although i do regret not buying perfume there because the prices were so good (haggle!). We were visiting for so long that we would just take the subway and randomly hop out considering that we semi-recognized the area to not be dangerous of course. My biggest regret was not getting to go to Chelsea Market. Ooh we did see an off Broadway Show that was amazing and absolutely hilarious. And Times Square was a sight to see at dark. There is so much to do that you will have a blast with whatever you choose. Have fun!!
SoHo*
New York is the best! I got to do an internship there a couple of summers ago and just loved it. As far as things to do you’ve got to go to a Broadway show, walk through central park and of course 5th Avenue. You also can’t miss the MOMA and the MET. SOHO is great for browsing and shopping and while your downtown you can check out Little Italy and China Town as well. And of course the touristy stuff is great too – don’t miss the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, The Empire State Building, Times Square, etc. I’m biased because I interned there, but go see a taping of the Today Show in Rockefeller Center. You won’t be able to go in the studio but the anchors are almost always out on the plaza during the summer. There are soooo many good restaurants but my favorites are Grimaldi’s in Brooklyn for THE BEST pizza (walk the bridge and then head here! you won’t regret it!), Sarabeth’s on the upper west side for brunch, Serendipity and Max Brenner for dessert, Carnegie Deli for sandwiches and cheesecake the size of your head, and Shake Shack for amazing burgers. Have so much fun! You will love it!
Also: the 91st street garden in Riverside Park is a must, you can reenact the last scene from You’ve Got Mail! (well, plus a baby bump, minus a dog.)
You definitely rock as a pregnant woman. You have such great style flares. I like this dress the most! The color is so stunning!
http://www.stylelifefashion.com
oh gracious, love this dress so much!!! you are just precious in it! curious though, did you have to hem it? I’m barely pushing 5 feet and all maxi dresses are so long on me. :) xo
Love your blue ring… Can you please share where it’s from??!!?
Target!
I’ve never been to NYC either so I took notes……just in case. :-)
I wish they’d had cute mommy to be looks like yours when I was pregnant 42 years ago. Things just were NOT that cute.
Hope you had a wonderful trip.
Blessings,
Spencer
